Southern Collects First Career Home Run in Split with MSOE

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – It was a mixed day for the Cougars, as the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) softball team hit the road to take on Northern Athletic Collegiate College (NACC) opponent, the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Raiders. CUC saw it's impressive nine-game winning streak come to an end in game one, falling 8-0 in five innings. However, the Cougars bounced back for game two, securing a 10-5 victory and the series split. CUC is now 18-10, 11-3 NACC.

Game One
Inside the Box Score
  • Jessica Geng (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded the Cougars lone hit of the game, a double in the fourth inning.

How It Happened
  • CUC quickly fell behind, as the Raiders took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
  • MSOE was able to double their lead in the second inning, with a three-run homer.
  • The Cougars got their lone hit of the game in the top of the fourth, with a leadoff double from Geng. Unfortunately, the Cougars wouldn't be able to capitalize on it.
  • CUC continued to struggle to get on base while MSOE was able to put up a run in the bottom of the fourth and the bottom of the fifth to take game one, 8-0.

Game Two
Inside the Box Score
  • Linley Southern (Decatur, Ill.) went two-for-three at the plate, with two RBI's and scoring three runs, including recording her first career home run.
  • Katelyn Smith (Chatsworth, Ga.) led the Cougars going four-for-five with two runs and an RBI.
  • Mayah Larenas (Chino, Calif.) went three-for-four, adding a run.
  • Ashley Shroll (Tampa, Fla.) took the win in the circle, pitching four innings and recording six strikeouts on 24 batters faced.

How It Happened
  • To begin game two, Emily Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to get on base. Then Smith stepped up and bunted, reaching first on a Raider's error, with Garcia advancing to second. Geng followed up with a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Garcia saw an opportunity with a passed ball by the Raiders and took the jump, running safely home and giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
  • That lead would be short lived as the Raiders would tie the game in the bottom of the first.
  • The second inning remained scoreless, but the Cougars regained the lead in the third. Kicking off the inning with back-to-back-to-back singles from Garcia, Smith, and Geng would load the bases. With Melisa Hadzic (Westchester, Ill.) at the plate, the Cougars knew a big play was coming, and she hit a standup double to the left center gap, bringing in two runs for the 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, MSOE would get back one run but continue to trail, 3-2.
  • Leading off the fourth, Southern blasted the ball out of the park for her first career home run and double the Cougars lead. Later in the inning, operating with two outs, Smith singled and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Geng then recorded an RBI single to lead 5-2. In the bottom half of the fourth, the Raiders worked to get a pair of runs back, but the Cougars maintained a slight 5-4 lead.
  • The Raiders made quick work of the Cougars' first two batters in the fifth inning. However, CUC capitalized in a two-out rally. Larenas singled and advanced on a passed ball while Southern was walked, to put runners on first and second for the Cougars. Kallie Tierney (Corona, Calif.) cracked a bases clearing triple, her first of the season, down the left field line two score both Southern and Larenas. The Raiders picked up on run in the bottom of the fifth, as the Cougars led 7-5.
  • After a quick sixth inning, Concordia came out blazing in the seventh. Back-to-back singles from Arissa Santos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Larenas led off the inning, before Haley Gulsby (Englewood, Fla.) came in to pinch run for Larenas. Staying hot, Southern hit an RBI single to bring home Santos. Garcia was able to hit a deep sacrifice fly to bring home Gulsby and Smith recorded an RBI single to plate Southern. The Cougars came away with the 10-5 victory.
