Melbourne, Fla. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars softball team traveled to Melbourne, Florida for a 10-day trip highlighting eight games to open the 2025 season. After splitting on day one and day two. The Cougars looked to start the second half of their games where they took on Concordia College Cobbers and the John Carroll University Blue Streaks. On the day, the Cougars had a huge win over the Cobbers showcasing a no-hitter, but fell to the Blue Streaks, following the trend and splitting on the day once again.
Game One
Inside the Box Score
- Ashley Shroll (Tampa, Fla.) pitched a fantastic seven innings at the mound where she pitched a no-hitter, the first of the season.
- Kallie Tierney (Corona, Calif.) went a perfect 3-3 at bats, where one of her hits was a double.
- Jessica Geng (Phoenix, Ariz.) also did well at the plate where she went 3-4.
Here's What Happened
- Geng got the first hit of the day with a single to left field but nothing would come from this hit as the Cougars left the inning with one left on base.
- The top of the third highlighted a double by Tierney where a sacrifice bunt by Katelyn Smith (Chatsworth, Ga.) advanced her to third. Another single from Geng would bring Tierney home and the Cougars would be the first on the scoreboard.
- For the rest of the game, the Cougars would have at least one hit in all remaining innings except the sixth.
- The final run of the game would be thanks to an Emily Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.) single that brought Smith home.
- With three up three down at the bottom of the seventh, Shroll officially clinched the first no-hitter of the 2025 season and led the Cougars to a win over the Cobbers
The Cougars took a few hours off before heading into their second game of the day against John Carroll.
Game Two
Inside the Box Score
- Mayah Larenas (Chino, Calif.) went a perfect 3-3 on the game.
- Garcia also went 1-1 in the game and along with Geng were the only two to reach home.
Here's What Happened
- The Blue Streaks kicked off scoring in the first inning with an early 1-0 lead but after Geng had a single to get on base, Smith had a single which allowed Geng to advance to third. An Alyssa Campos (Eastvale, Calif.) sacrifice fly would allow Geng to step on home plate and put up what would be one of two runs in the game.
- Neither team scored again until the top of the fourth where the Blue Streaks scored once more making the score 2-1.
- It wasn't until the top of the sixth that the Blue Streaks took over. They would go on to score three runs increasing their lead to 5-1.
- At the top of the seventh, the Blue Streaks would score once more making the score 6-1 but the Cougars capitalized on an error made at the bottom of the inning to be the last to score in the game. However, even with the run, the Cougars would fall where the final score was 6-2, the Blue Streaks.
