Cougars Push Pacific to OT Before Falling 81-76

Forest Grove, Ore. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's basketball team continued into their second game of the Schumann Classic, where they went up against the Boxers of Pacific University. After some neck-to-neck gameplay, the Cougars fell to the Boxers with a final score of 81-76.

 

Inside the Box Score:

  • Ryker Johnson (Fond du Lac, Wis.) ended the night with 20 points, nine rebounds and two steals.
  • Darrian Williams (Garland, Texas) followed up with 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
  • Vic Garrett (Chicago, Ill.) walked away with 12 points, 13 rebounds and three steals, along with teammate Sebastian Hill (Decatur, Ill.), who also had 12 points and five rebounds.
 

Here's What Happened

First Half

The Boxers were the first to start off scoring with a heavy three-point jumper, a layup from Garrett following close behind. The Boxers pushed into the lead with their three-pointers, putting the score at 9-2. A layup and a three-point jumper from Williams was able to cut into the lead, but the Boxers remained on top. The Boxers eventually gained an 11-point advantage on the Cougars before Honore Yangoua (Williamstown, Ky.) bit back with a three-pointer, 20-12. The Boxers progressed in widening their lead; Aaron Brown (Joliet, Ill.) and Tallis Lowery (Fairview Heights, Ill.) were able to make some free throws, bringing the score gap back down to 10 points. A three-pointer from Williams had put the Cougars within five with 3:34 remaining. Johnson aided the Cougars with a tip-in, 33-29. The Boxers kept their lead going into halftime, 35-29.

 

Second Half

Nearly two minutes into the half, Lowery started off the scoring with a free throw. The Boxers were able to keep their lead, but the Cougars continued to bring the fight, 38-32. Johnson landed a three-pointer jumper, finally putting the Cougars within two. The Boxers bounced back quickly, but the Cougars kept coming with a layup from Johnson and a three-pointer from Hill, 43-41. A jumper from Johnson tied the teams up; the Cougars grabbed their first lead of the night after a jumper from Brown. The teams proceeded to go back and forth, fighting for the lead. With 4:00 remaining, the Cougars were able to take the lead. With 0:28 remaining, the teams were tied up and ended up keeping their tie, going into overtime, 71-71.

 

Overtime

Hill led off overtime scoring with a three-point jumper. The Boxers defended themselves with some jumpers, putting them ahead by one. A Boxer got a layup in, putting the Cougars into a three point deficit. Johnson had put up a layup, giving the Cougars a fighting chance with 0:42 remaining. Ultimately, the Cougars fell to the Boxers with a final score of 81-76.

 

What's Next
