Cougars Display Grit Despite Defeat at Marian

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's soccer team took a trip up to Fond du Lac, Wis. to face the Sabres of Marian University for a Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) matchup. The Cougars never gave up but fell short, 4-1.

Inside the Box
  • Nethan Gudiel (Chicago, Ill.) registered six saves in net.
  • The Cougars' lone goal came from Justin Ocampo (Melrose Park, Ill.).
  • Caleb Kale (Moline, Ill.) led the offensive charge with four total shots, two of which were on goal.

First Half
  • CUC quickly fell behind as the Sabres scored a goal in the second minute.
  • That lead was doubled in the 14th minute.
  • Despite the deficit, the Cougars found some momentum forward with a shot by Michael Senese (Naperville, Ill.) in the 16th minute. Kale tried his luck a few minutes later, but the Cougars continued to search for a goal.

Second Half

  • Velasquez answered with a shot to the corner in the 51st minute but was once again denied by Marian's goalkeeper.

  • Juan Moresco (Mercedes, Soriano) took a shot in the 69th minute. While his shot was saved, it earned the Cougars a corner kick. The ball popped loose from the chaos in the box and Ocampo put the Cougars on the board.
  • Gudiel continued to make important saves as the clock wound down. Asael Castaneda (Bensenville, Ill.) created one more attempt for the Cougars in the 89th minute, but the Sabres' goalkeeper had it covered.
