The Battle Of Concordias Leave The Cougars Behind

RIVER FOREST, ILL.- The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars women's volleyball team faced the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons on home courts this Thursday. After battling three hard sets, the Falcons swept the Cougars 3-0.

INSIDE THE BOX:

  • Lili Hunt (Greenfield, Ind.) led the game with nine kills, 24 total attacks and earned 9.5 points.
  • Kate Foley (Milwaukee, Wis.) followed Hunt with 17 attacks with Rachel Livesay (Medinah Ill.) right behind with 16 attacks.
  • Bethany Roethel (Westby, Wis.) led the Cougars with 16 digs.
  • Eva Fitzgerald (Houston, Texas.) led with 20 assists across the board and eight digs for the Cougars.

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED:

SET ONE:

The Falcons were the first on the scoreboard after an attack error by the Cougars, only for the Cougars to earn a point right after. Despite conceding the set's opening point due to an attack error, the Cougars quickly gained momentum, establishing the lead and scoring five consecutive points. However, the Falcons strongly capitalized with several kills from multiple players and resulted in them taking the lead, 7-6. Although Beatriz Goncalves (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) of the Cougars managed to tie the score with a kill, the Falcons maintained their momentum, seizing the lead off of errors from the Cougars. After constant battle between the Cougars and Falcons, the Falcons secured victory and took set one, 25-17.

SET TWO:

In a dynamic second set, the Falcons were first on the scoreboard with the Cougars following after. The teams begin exchanging points for the next few plays, however the Falcons took the lead 11-4. With a kill by Hunt, she was able to bring the Cougars fight and gain a couple more points, still following behind 9-21. Unfortunately with the Falcons lead, the Cougars weren't able to put as much on the board as they were conceding. With that being said, the set ended with a service error for the Cougars. The Falcons took set two 25-13.

SET THREE:

The Falcons took the lead on set three, 5-0. With the Falcons lead, Fitzgerald was able to get things started for the Cougars with a kill, putting them on the scoreboard. Feeding off of Fitzgerald's energy, the Cougars were able to score six consecutive points taking the lead, 7-6. The Falcons, continuing their energy, followed up with a point, tying up the scoreboard 7-7. Both teams went to battle for the next points. Despite the Cougars continuing to fight, the Falcons found a way to take the lead with four unanswered points, 19-15. This created a divide in score and drove the Falcons up the board, clearing the Cougars from a chance of winning the third set. Therefore with the Cougars not able to come back, the Falcons swept the Cougars with winning all three sets. The Falcons took set three 25-19.
