ROCK ISLAND, ILL. — The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's soccer team opened up their 2024 season with a road trip west to Augustana College on Friday afternoon. CUC could do little to slow down a rolling Augustana squad, who shutout the Cougars 4-0.
Inside the Box Score
-
In her collegiate debut, goalie Katelyn Wagner (Lagrange, Ky.) made five saves in her 80:01 of action.
-
Natalie Flores (Placentia, Calif.) and Allie Brown (St. Louis, Mo.) did their best to generate offense for Concordia, each putting one shot on goal. Flores was also the only Cougar to put up more than one shot in total.
-
Pamela Saldivar (Chicago, Ill.) played in all 90 minutes of action.
How it Happened
First Half
It did not take long for Augustana to get going, as they scored the opening goal just 2:11 into the game. Roughly eight minutes later, CUC made a switch at goalie, replacing starter Brooke Sheriff (Simi Valley, Calif.) with the freshman Wagner.
The change did little to slow Augustana down, as they potted another goal nine minutes after the substitution. Concordia finally got their first shot on goal at the 27:52 mark when Flores's bottom left shot was saved by Augustana's keeper, keeping the score at 2-0.
Less than 10 minutes later, Augustana extended their lead with another goal to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Then, with just 15 seconds left in the half, the Cougars got another chance at a goal thanks to Brown's shot, but Augustana's goalie stood tall once again, meaning the score remained 3-0 heading into the break.
Second Half
The defenses came out to play in the second half, as the first shot on goal did not come until 23 minutes into the half when Augustana's chance at a fourth goal was saved by Wagner for what was her fourth save of the game.
Augustana got back into a scoring groove at the 76:01 mark when a goal jacked their lead up to 4-0. Less than 10 seconds later, Augustana almost snagged goal number five, but Wagner prevented that with her fifth save of the day.
Neither team put another shot on net during the final 14 minutes of action as Augustana held on to their 4-0 lead until the final buzzer rang, securing their win and handing the Cougars their first loss of the year.
