RIVER FOREST, ILL. --- The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) softball team closed out their 2024 season with a home doubleheader against Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW). With what was a bat-battle in game one and pitchers' duel in game two, the Cougars would lose both to the Falcons, 11-0 and 6-2.
Game One: 11-0 L
Inside the Box Score:
- McKyler Morris (Belvidere, Ill.) was a perfect two-for-two to start off the afternoon
- Eden Pufahl (Laguna Hills, Calif.) and Emma Borrelli (Arlington Heights, Ill.) split this game, pitching four and three innings, respectively
How It Happened:
- CUW started off the scoring in the first with a double and a single to take the early lead 1-0. This theme would continue for the second inning, making it 2-0.
- Gina Westphal (Elmhurst, Ill.) was hit by a pitch and Morris shot her first single of the day, but they would be left stranded in the second.
- The Falcons smacked a homer, dragging their lead to 3-0. Responding to this, Arissa Santos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Emily Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.) would both single, but no Cougars would make it across the plate.
- 5-0 would be the score after the fourth, with CUW continuing their stride. Borrelli would come in after this, and some big plays from the defense kept the Falcons off the board again.
- The sixth and seventh is when CUW would do some real damage to make it 11-0. The Cougars were unable to make a comeback, ending this game as an 11-0 loss.
Game Two: 6-2 L
Inside the Box Score:
- Garcia and Katelyn Smith (Chatsworth, Ga.) led the way in game two, both getting two hits
- Jessica Geng (Phoenix, Ariz.) picked up her season first homerun
- Megan Bouska (Plainfield, Ill.) logged the most inning in game two, with 4.2 innings pitched and two strikeouts
How It Happened:
- The Cougars started off strong in game two, with singles from Santos and Garcia to score the first run of the game 1-0.
- Bouska was dealing on the mound, as she picked up a strikeout to end the second.
- Alyssa Kontopoulos (Elmhurst, Ill.) and Smith would both get aboard on singles, but be left stranded on the base paths.
- The score remained the same until the fourth, when CUW would tie the game up at 1-1. In the fifth is when the Falcons would open up the scoring, quickly going up 5-1.
- A quick response came from Geng, when she launched her first homer of the year over the left field fence 5-2.
- The Falcons tacked on one more run in the seventh to make it 6-2. Unfortunately, one base runner would be left on in the seventh, ending the Cougars season on a 6-2 loss.
