Cougars Just Short Against Eagles

RIVER FOREST, ILL. — With Concordia University Chicago (CUC) hosting a plethora of sports this Saturday, the Cougar softball team hosted the Edgewood College Eagles in a conference doubleheader. Both games had some huge moments, but the Eagles swept the day on the Cougars 8-6 and 5-3.

Game One: 8-6 L

Inside the Box Score:

  • Jessica Geng (Phoenix, Ariz.) had a standout game one, going three-for-four with two RBIs

  • Right behind her was Emily Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.), who went two-for-four with two runs scored and Arissa Santos (Moreno Valley, Calif.), with a double and two RBIs

  • Ashley Shroll (Tampa, Fla.) threw six innings in the circle and picked up the loss, but also six strikeouts on the afternoon

How It Happened:

  • Edgewood started off hot to start, taking a quick lead of 2-0 with some great hits out of the Eagles lineup. This continued into the top of the second, when they would knock a ball out of the park to make it 3-0.

  • The action would start for the Cougars in the bottom of the third, Alyssa Kontopoulos (Elmhurst, Ill.) would draw a walk, followed by a Garcia single. Haley Gulsby (Englewood, Fla.) would single and Melisa Hadzic (Westchester, Ill.) would draw a walk with the bases loaded to make it 3-1. Geng then busted the game open with a scorching ball to left for a two-RBI single to tie the game up 3-3.

  • Annabella Archuletta (Pueblo, Colo.) kept the action going, as she bunted a single to score Hadzic and take the lead 4-3.

  • Top of the fourth, Shroll picked up two strikeouts, looking to get the Cougars going offensively again.

  • However, Edgewood would pick up a handful of singles to tie the game up at 4-4. This continued as the Cougars had some miscues, allowing the Eagles to score two more 6-4.

  • In the bottom of the sixth, McKyler Morris (Belvidere, Ill.) would single and steal second to get into scoring position. But she would be left stranded on the bases.

  • Edgewood picked up another homer to take their lead to 8-4. But a double play from Garcia would help to get the Cougars out of the jam.

  • Julia Pataluna (Commerce City, Colo.) and Garcia both picked up singles in the seventh, before Santos smacked a double to the wall, cutting the lead to 8-6. However, the Cougars would not be able to score again, giving the win to the Eagles in game one 8-6.

Game Two: 5-3 L

Inside the Box Score:

  • Garcia was a stella three-for-four at the plate in game two, including her first homerun of her career

  • Santos was following behind her, going two-for-four

  • Megan Bouska (Plainfield, Ill.) had an impressive afternoon in the circle, going five innings with only five hits allowed and one strikeout

How It Happened:

  • Gulsby would get the offense started in the first, smacking a double to left, but it would not be enough to score first.

  • Edgewood would, again, be the first team to score as they took a 3-0 lead in the second. They would tack on more to this in the third to make it 5-0.

  • Garcia would come up huge to start, hitting her homer to left field and making it a 5-1 ball game.

  • Santos would get a single and two Cougars hit by pitches would load the bases up for Bouska. Who was able to pop in a single to left to score another run 5-2.

  • After this, it truly became a pitcher's duel out on the field. As the Cougar defense would run a flawless first-and-third play to stop the Eagles.

  • In the bottom of the sixth, Geng would pop up a sacrifice fly to score Pataluna and cut the lead to 5-3. With the Cougars not able to make more offensive action in the seventh, the Eagles swept them for game two 5-3.

The Cougars are scheduled to host Rockford University tomorrow at 12 and 2 p.m. Coverage for all of our sports can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
