Double Trouble from Phoenix: Dorsch and Krater Crush Cardinals with Back-to-Back Bombs for 13-3 Victory

RIVER FOREST, ILL. – The Concordia University Chicago baseball team took a pause in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play to take on the North Central College Cardinals. The Cougars last played the Cardinals one year ago to the date, falling 5-1. This go around, the Cougars would steal the win after a dominating performance on the mound, in the field, and at the plate that would provide the Cougars with the 13-3 win in just seven innings of play.

INSIDE THE BOX
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A leadoff walk and balk for the Cardinals would put a runner on second base early on, but back-to-back fly outs and a groundout to first base would close the top half of the inning with a blank on the scoreboard. In the Cougars' half of the inning, a leadoff walk for Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) and a passed ball would put a runner in scoring position with Krater at the plate. A single from Krater would move Hickman to third and a passed ball would score the first run of the day.
  • With the Cougars warding off the Cardinals for the second consecutive inning, a leadoff walk for Dom Owens (Frankfort, Ill.) paired with a single from Muñoz and a hit by pitch for Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.) would load the bases up. With a 2-2 count, Dorsch would send a long ball onto Division Street and clear the bases for the four run grand slam and put the Cougars up 5-0. One pitch later, Krater would step into the batter's box and swing at the first pitch and send it to the exact same spot for a solo homerun to put the Cougars up 6-0.
  • With FitzGerald on the mound and Jerkatis making his field debut in right field the inning would come to a close in merely three batters. After a leadoff double for the Cardinals would put a runner on second, an unassisted double play from Muñoz would quickly erase the double and put two away. With a fly ball hit to shallow right field, a sliding catch from Jerkatis would get the Cougars out of the inning in three batters.
  • With Jerkatis kicking off the top of the third for the Cougars, the freshman would see seven pitches and a full count before collecting his first collegiate hit up the middle. With a flyout and a double play on the horizon for the Cardinals, the Cougars would close the inning still sitting with the 6-0.
  • In the top of the fourth a leadoff hit by pitch and a double would put a runner on third for a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the day for the Cardinals. A swinging strikeout to end the inning at the hands of Jones Jr. would keep leave the Cougars up 6-1.
  • The bottom of the fourth would keep things moving upward for the Cougars with a leadoff single for Muñoz paired with a double from Boswell. A single from Hickman would score one and advance to second on the throw home. With a passed ball giving Hickman the time to get to third, a well-timed double steal from Krater and Hickman would draw the throw to second and let Hickman safely cross the plate to go up 8-1 at the end of four.
  • Another fast outing in the field at the hands of Gutierrez would send the Cougars back to their offensive half after three outs in four batters. The Cougars would tack on one more run in the bottom of the fifth off a leadoff single from Jerkatis paired with a stolen base and a passed ball would put the freshman on third. A single through the left side for Muñoz would send Jerkatis home and put the Cougars up 9-1.
  • The bottom of the sixth would prove to be just as lethal to the Cardinals as a leadoff walk for Hickman paired with a single through the left side for Dorsch would put runners on first and second. Back-to-back flyouts would give Hickman time to make it to third and Dorsch to steal second while Jerkatis would take a walk and load the bases up. With the 2-2 count, Owens would take a swing at a ball right down the middle and send it to right center to sore all three baserunners and put himself on second. With singles through the left for Caleb Anderson (Plainfield, Ill.) and Muñoz, Owens would be able to cross the plate and put the Cougars up 13-1, scoring the last run of the day for CUC.
  • With the game being in run rule territory heading to the top of the seventh, the Cougars would put Zagerman on the mound and Sergio Vazquez Jr. (Concord, Calif.) over at second. The Cardinals would be able to tack on two runs off three walks and one hit, but a swinging strikeout for Zagerman and a groundout to Vazquez Jr. would close the game in the seventh inning.
