Cougars Drop Two To Nationally Ranked Stars

ROSEMONT, ILL. --- Facing off a nationally ranked opponent, the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) softball team took a quick trip to take on #21 Dominican University (DU). With a nightcap doubleheader, the Cougars would drop two games to the Stars, 8-0 in five innings and 7-3.

Game One: 8-0 (5 inn.) L
Inside the Box Score:
  • McKyler Morris (Belvidere, Ill.) would be the only Cougar to pick up a hit, going one-for-two
  • Eden Pufahl (Laguna Hills, Calif.) would pitch the majority of game one, with two innings pitched and one strikeout recorded
How It Happened:
  • DU would strike in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead to start the game.
  • In the second, Morris would pick up her hit, followed by Gina Westphal (Elmhurst, Ill.) being hit by a pitch. Unfortunately, the offense could not get going after this.
  • The Stars continued their offensive rally, making it 4-0 in the second and then 6-0 in the fourth.
  • Arissa Santos would get on base due to a Star miscue, but it was not enough to get DU completely off guard. The Stars finished off this game in the fifth, with a run-rule loss for the Cougars of 8-0 in five innings.
Game Two: 7-3 L
Inside the Box Score:
  • Morris was the offensive power in game two as well, going two-for-four
  • Megan Bouska (Plainfield, Ill.) had a great game two at the plate, going one-for-two with two RBIs
  • Ashley Shroll (Tampa, Fla.) threw all six innings, allowing four earned runs and picking up four strikeouts
How It Happened:
  • DU would lead 1-0 in the first three innings, as Shroll and DU's pitcher faced off in a duel. This continued with a Star homerun to make it 3-0.
  • Melisa Hadzic (Westchester, Ill.) got on base due to a mistake by the shortstop, allowing Morris to single and Bouska to walk, loading the bases. Haley Gulsby (Englewood, Fla.) would then send a fly ball into foul territory, allowing Hadzic to tag up and score 3-1.
  • Tacking on a few more runs, the Stars would carry their lead to 6-1.
  • However, Westphal and Annabella Archuletta (Pueblo, Colo.) would single to start the offense in the fifth inning. Bouska would then single down the left field line, allowing two runs to score 6-3.
  • The Stars would score one more run, making it 7-3. This is where the score would end, with CUC losing 7-3 in this contest.
The Cougars will be traveling up to Milwaukee this weekend to play Wisconsin Lutheran College on Saturday at 12 and 2 p.m. Coverage for all of our sports can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
