RIVER FOREST, ILL. – The Concordia University Chicago baseball team battled with the nationally ranked Aurora University Spartans, falling in both games despite picking up six homeruns on the day.
GAME ONE: 3-1 L
INSIDE THE BOX
- Julio Cajigas (Romeoville, Ill.) led the Cougars in game one with one hit in three at bats while picking up the lone run of the game with a solo homerun.
- Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.), Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.), Caleb Anderson (Plainfield, Ill.), and Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.) all picked up a hit in the game as well.
- Dylan Scott (Bartlett, Ill.) pitched six innings while allowing five hit and one run and picking up six strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars and Spartans stood in a standoff for the first five innings while five of the 12 total hits came during those innings.
- With the blank standoff, the Cougars would strike first off a solo homerun from Cajigas to take the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
- Holding the lead for an inning, the Spartans would tie things up in the top of the sixth. The bottom of the sixth would give the Cougars the chance to jump back ahead after two hits would get runners to second, but unable to advance any further, leave the inning blank.
- The top of the seventh would put the Spartans ahead 3-1 after a double to the left field would score two.
- Needing to put two runs on the board to keep the game alive, a leadoff single from Mahler would put one runner on but the Cougars would be unable to convert and fall in game one 3-1.
HIGHLIGHTS
GAME TWO: 12-8 L
INSIDE THE BOX
- Five Cougars hit homeruns in game two in Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.), Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.), Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.), J. Mahler, Cajigas, and Dorsch.
- Nine pitchers saw time on the mound in game two
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Unlike game one, the Spartans jump started their offense early with a three run top of the first inning. The Spartans would hang onto the 3-0 lead until the Cougars got the bats warm in the bottom of the second after a leadoff double to centerfield from J. Mahler. Put one runner in scoring position. With two consecutive flyouts, J. Mahler would make his way around the bases and score off the sacrifice fly from Boswell to make it a 3-1 game.
- With a new arm on the mound in Dylan Ferraro (Windsor, Colo.) the Spartans would hang stagnant for the top of the third and hand things back over to the Cougars where Cajigas would smash his second homerun of the day to make it a one run game.
- The Spartans would answer back right away in the top of the fourth with a solo homerun of their own before two more hits would score another and put the Spartans up by two.
- The Cougars would answer back for themselves with a leadoff solo homerun from J. Mahler before a storybook start would see a second solo homerun right after from Kasik to make it a one run game once again.
- Holding the Spartans for the better half of two innings, they would be able to tack on two more runs late in the top of the seventh inning. With the Spartans seeming to start to run away with the game the Cougars needed to kick things into high gear heading into the bottom of the seventh.
- A double from Cajigas would put one runner on base for B. Mahler to send a long ball over the left field fence for a two run homer to cut the deficit from four to two.
- Mirroring the situation from the bottom of the fourth, Krater would send a shot right back to Division Street for the second back-to-back homeruns for the Cougars in the game.
- With the Cougars trailing by one once again the Spartans would rip open the game with three hits and three runs in the top of the eighth to make it an 11-7 game.
- Starting the inning off with two consecutive walks for Dom Owens () and Boswell a single from Dorsch would score Owens and make it an 11-8 ballgame.
- With the Spartans tacking on one more run in the top of the ninth, the Cougars would hit the crunchtime to put up four runs to keep the game alive.
- Falling in three batters, the Cougars would close the game 12-8 despite some intense battling.
