CLERMONT, FLA. — After having one game rained out to open up The Spring Games, the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) softball team was able to pick up another game before leaving the Sunshine State. Taking on the Adrian College Bulldogs, this defensive duel ended with the Bulldogs narrowly defeating the Cougars 2-1.
Inside the Box Score:
-
Jessica Geng (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the offensive with an impressive three-for-four at the plate
-
Following her was Melisa Hadzic (Westchester, Ill.), who went two-for-three with the lone scored run
-
Ashley Shroll (Tampa, Fla.) both picked up an RBI and pitched three full innings in the circle. Megan Bouska (Plainfield, Ill.) and Emma Borrelli (Arlington Heights, Ill.) also came in to assist in a team effort on the mound
How It Happened
-
Starting off in the first, Arissa Santos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) singled through the left side, but was stranded on the bases. Shroll made a three-up, three-down inning with her dominant command of the zone.
-
In the top of the second, both Hadzic and Katelyn Smith (Chatsworth, Ga.) would single to get on base. Then, Shroll would smack a single to right field and score Hadzic to take the lead 1-0.
-
The Cougars would hold off the Bulldog offense in the second. Hadzic and Geng would both make their way on to base again, but would not cross the plate for CUC.
-
Adrian would make their offensive strike with their quick speed on the bases and a double to take the lead in their favor 2-1.
-
With Bouska now on the mound, both teams would battle against these pitchers as they looked to find their opening. This included incredible defensive plays in both the infield and outfield.
-
Geng, Santos, and Emily Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.) would all single to start the fifth, loading up the bases. Unfortunately, the Cougars were unable to capitalize with the bases loaded and had to go back out to defend the score.
-
The CUC pitching staff was vigilant in the circle, with Borrelli finishing off in style as they held Adrian to just two runs.
-
A couple more Cougars would get on in the top of the seventh, but would not be able to cross home, resulting in a loss on the day. Adrian defeated CUC with a final score of 2-1.
The Cougars have one final day of The Spring Games, as they battle Bluffton University and Rivier University, tomorrow at 10 and 12:15 EST. Coverage for all of our sports can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
