Cougar Baseball Falters as Struggles at the Plate Lead to Losses Against Raiders

MILWAUKEE, WIS. – In a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) showdown, the Concordia University Chicago baseball team ventured to Milwaukee to take on the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). Despite coming off a conference sweep earlier in the week, the Cougar squad struggled to find their rhythm at the plate and would fall short in both matchups.

GAME ONE: 1-0 L
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Only four Cougars secured hits on the day with Julio Cajigas (Romeoville, Ill.), Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.), Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.), and Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.) securing one hit each.
  • Wyatt McLaughlin (Cave Creek, Ariz.) pitched six innings on the day giving up no runs off six hits. He picked up nine strikeouts in 27 batters faced.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A leadoff single from Cajigas got things moving in the top of the first but would be thrown out at second on the steal attempt. Two consecutive balls in the air would pick up the other two outs in the inning and send the Cougars to the field for the first time of the day. A leadoff single for the Raiders would put a runner on base early before a Cougar error would put runners on the corner bags. A swinging strikeout from McLaughlin paired with a groundout to Mahler at second base would close the inning with no damage done.
  • The top of the second would see half of the hits for the Cougars after two singles up the middle from Krater and Boswell would load the bases up following a walk for Mahler. With only one out and bases loaded the Cougars would be unable to convert and two strikeouts would close the inning with no runs and three left on base.
  • Six strikeouts for McLaughlin in two innings of work would once again put the Cougars back behind the plate where the Cougars would find two runners on base but be unable to convert into runs.
  • As both teams continued to struggle to get hot, the Cougars would see six outs in six batters while holding the Raiders to zero runs as well. In the top of the seventh, a leadoff double from Mahler paired with an error from the Raiders would put two on base for the Cougars. A pair of strikeouts and a fielder's choice would close the top of the inning with the score still tied, pressuring the Cougar defense to combat the Raiders a bit longer.
  • A leadoff triple from the Raiders followed up by a single would give the Raiders the walkoff win.

GAME TWO: 9-4 L
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) led the Cougars with a perfect four for four at the plate with two RBIs.
  • Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.), Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.), and Cajigas all picked up hits in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars jumped ahead early in game two after a single from Dorsch paired with a stolen base put him in scoring position. A double to left center from Kasik would send Dorsch home and pick up the first run of the day for the Cougars.
  • The Raiders retaliated quickly after a four run inning gave them the lead in which they would not look back. The top of the second would get under way with Mahler finding his way on base after getting hit by a pitch. With a groundout moving Mahler around the bases, a single up the middle from Hickman would score the second run of the day.
  • With the Raiders able to tack on another run in the bottom of the second, the Cougars would be back to a three run deficit. With the third inning only seeing four batters each, the Cougars would get back to work in the top of the fourth. A single from Hickman would score Xavier Zagerman (Chandler, Ariz.) from third and cut the Cougar deficit down to two.
  • A three up three down inning at the hands of Richard Gomez (Chicago, Ill.) in the bottom of the fourth would see the same fate on the Cougars in the top of the fifth. A two run homer for MSOE in the bottom of the fifth would put them ahead of the Cougars by four as the Cougars continued to struggle to get hot.
  • A single from Hickman in the top of the seventh paired with a single from Cajigas would put a runner in scoring position for Dorsch to send a sacrifice fly out to left field and bring the Cougars back within three runs.
  • Another hot inning for the Raiders would score two and put them over the Cougars 9-4. In a do or die top of the ninth inning, the Cougars would be unable to tack on any other runs and close the game 9-4.

The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday, April 2nd as they head to Lisle, Ill. to take on the ranked Benedictine Eagles. First pitch is set for noon and coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
