Cougars Unable To Defeat Firebirds

KENOSHA, WIS. — After opening up conference play, the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) softball team headed off for some non-conference play against Carthage College. After both games have been played out, the Cougars were swept by the Firebirds 11-3 in five innings and 6-2.

Game One: 11-3 L (5 inn.)

Inside the Box Score:

  • Two Cougars had a perfect two-for-two in game one, Annabella Archuletta (Pueblo, Colo.) and Haley Gulsby (Englewood, Fla.). Archuletta picked up a double as well

  • Snagging her second homer of the season, Melisa Hadzic (Westchester, Ill.) helped to bring in two runs with a long ball

  • Eden Pufahl (Laguna Hills, Calif.) came in and shut down Carthage in the fourth inning with no hits or runs scored

How It Happened:

  • Carthage started off hot in the first inning, taking a quick lead of 5-0. This came off of a single and then a bases loaded situation where the Cougars had to get the outs away from home.

  • In the top of the second, Archuletta and Katelyn Smith (Chatsworth, Ga.) would both single to get on base, but no one would hit them in to score.

  • Two doubles in the bottom of the third would tack on some more runs for Carthage 8-0. However, CUC would get out of it and get back to the plate.

  • Olivia Stroker (St. Louis, Mo.) would go in to run for Archuletta, then Hadzic would send her long ball to cut down the Carthage lead 8-2.

  • In this same inning, Alyssa Kontopoulos (Elmhurst, Ill.) would pick up a double, but would be left stranded. Then, the Firebirds would make a huge surge back and take their lead to 11-2 over the Cougars.

  • In a do or die situation, CUC would score one more run, after Jessica Geng (Phoenix, Ariz.) would get on base with a single. Then, Hadzic would push a ball through the infield to score her 11-3.

  • The Cougars would be defeated in five innings however with a final score of 11-3.

Game Two: 6-2 L

Inside the Box Score:

  • Gulsby would, again, lead the offense in game two, going two-for-three with an RBI and a walk

  • Hadzic would grab another RBI on the afternoon and Pufahl would shoot off a double in her time at the plate

  • Pufahl and Ashley Shroll (Tampa, Fla.) would both take to the circle to try and hold Carthage down

How It Happened:

  • To start off game two, Arissa Santos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) picked up a single for herself, but would be left stranded to begin this contest.

  • Carthage would take this opportunity in the top of the first to score at 1-0.

  • Gulsby would single up the middle in the second to score the first run of the game for the Cougars. This would have the game tied up at 1-1.

  • These two would be locked in battle as it became a pitchers' duel between the two teams. In the bottom of the fourth, Carthage found another run for themselves 2-1.

  • Hadzic pushed a ball past second base, getting Emily Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.) to score and tie the game again 2-2.

  • Looking to pull back into the lead, Carthage opened it up and took a lead of 6-2.

  • In the top of the seventh, Archuletta and Hadzic would get on base, but the Cougars would end up falling to the Firebirds 6-2.

The Cougars go back to conference play on Saturday, as they take on St. Norbert College at 12 and 2 p.m. Coverage for all of our sports can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
