Mahler and Rensberger Homeruns Highlight Wicked Cougar Loss

CHICAGO, ILL. – Ahead of the conference opener this weekend, the Concordia University Chicago baseball team took on the North Park Vikings for a single game in Chicago. The Cougars fell to the Vikings 19-6 in their second matchup of the season, after facing each other in the season opening tournament in Sauget, Ill. where the Cougars faced a similar fate.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) led the offense as he made his debut as the starting designated hitter picking up two hits in two at bats with two RBIs.
  • Following behind him was Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.) who went three for four at the plate with one stolen base.
  • Nick Rensberger (Milford, Ind.) was the only other Cougars to go yard while picking up one hit in three at bats with one RBI on his solo homer.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite picking up one hit in the top of the first inning, three batters with three outs would put pressure on the Cougar defense. An early two run homer from the Vikings would put them up 2-0 with one out. A fly out to Rensberger in right field and a throw down to second from Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) would close the inning with limited damage done.
  • Another quick top of the inning would harm the Cougars as both Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) and J. Mahler would find gaps in the outfield to get on base, but would be unable to convert and would close the inning in a similar manner as the first inning.
  • Three walks in the bottom of the second would load the bases up as a single up the middle would score two more and move the Vikings ahead by four. With a new arm on the mound for the Cougars in Xavier Zagerman (Chandler, Ariz.) the Cougars would be unable to hold off the Vikings and allow two unearned runs to close the inning trailing 6-0.
  • Needing to find their groove, a leadoff single from Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) paired with a bunt from James Kloppke Jr. (Norridge, Ill.) and a single from Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.) would load the bases up early. A groundout double play would pick up two outs but not before scoring one run and officially putting the Cougars on the board.
  • A single to centerfield immediately after from B. Mahler would score another run and close the gap a bit more with the Cougars trailing 6-2.
  • A monstrous inning for the Vikings would jump them ahead over the Cougars by nine runs and put pressure on the Cougar offense to keep things moving along. With a leadoff walk putting Rensberger on base, a skyrocket two run homerun to right center from J. Mahler would jumpstart the Cougars and work to close the gap.
  • A single through the right side from Hickman paired with a stolen base would put him in scoring position for a double from Krater to score the fifth run of the game for the Cougars.
  • With two walks to start the inning, two new arms would see the mound in the bottom of the fourth in David Gutierrez (Hesperia, Calif.) and Dylan Ferraro (Windsor, Colo.). Despite the defensive efforts, the Viking's offense would be too much and take a nine run lead once again.
  • A walk for J. Mahler and three quick outs would close the top of the fifth with no work done for the Cougars as the Vikings continued to excel at the plate. A monstrous two innings for the Vikings would hold the Cougars stagnant and put the Vikings up 19-5.
  • Struggling to find any offensive movement, a solo shot from Rensberger would tack another run onto the board for the Cougars as they closed the game in the seventh inning 19-6.
