Cougars Pick Up First Win Of The Season

SAUGET, ILL. — The Concordia Chicago Cougars (CUC) played their final game of the weekend, Sunday Feburary 25, matching up against Lawrence University's Knights (LU). In an offensive brawl the Cougars came out on top 6-2.

Inside the Box
  • Wyatt McLaughlin (Cave Creek, Ariz.) started the game for the Cougars on the mound going five innings and striking out a career high nine of the Vikings batters.
  • Alejandro Muñoz (Evergreen Park, Ill.) and Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.) led CUC's offense, each picking up two hits on the day. Munoz took the lead in RBI's for the Cougars with two.
  • David Deimling (Bloomingdale, Ill.) secured the save today for Concordia throwing one shutout inning with two strikeouts.

How it Happened
  • Lawrence struck first in the top of the second scoring on a passed ball. McLaughlin then came back with a strikeout to get the Cougars out of the inning with three runners left stranded on the bases, leaving the score at 1-0 favoring the Vikings.
  • After giving up one run in the third, the Cougars battled back on defense and left LU scoreless for the remainder of the game.
  • Concordia started to come alive in the bottom of the sixth. Boswell kicked off the bottom of the inning with a double to left center field. He would then score on a sacrifice fly hit by Julio Cajigas (Romeoville, Ill.)

  • The Cougars kept the momentum going in the bottom of the seventh. Munoz punched out a double to right field to score two and then scored on a passed ball later in the inning. This left the score at 4-2 in favor of CUC.
  • After a scorless top of the eighth for reliever Anthony Pullano (Park Ridge, Ill.), the Cougars kept the bats alive. Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) started the rally with a single up the middle to advance the runner on one base. The Knights then hit Cougar Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) loading the bases for CUC. Munoz then hit the Cougars into a double play, Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) crossing the plate on the play. The Cougars final run scored after Boswell singled to the left side with Mahler scoring from third base. This left the Cougars up 6-2.
  • Deimling secured the save in the top of the ninth, giving up two walks and battling back to strike out a Knight to end the game. CUC stole the win with a final score of 6-2

The Cougars are back in action March 2, when they head to Florida for the week to play in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Coverage can be found on cucougars.com
