Cougars Fall in NACC Opener

DE PERE, WIS. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's basketball team traveled to Wisconsin to take on the Green Knights of St. Norbert College in their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) game of the season. The Cougars ultimately fell to the Green Knights moving to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the NACC.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Sydney Nimsakont (Glendale Heights, Ill.) led the Cougars with seven points, two rebounds, two assists, and one steal. This is the fifth consecutive game that the freshman has been atop the leaderboard for the Cougars.
  • Aniyah Hinton-Henry (Gary, Ind.) led on the defensive side with four rebounds while adding in six points and one steal.
  • Nazuri Whigham (Naperville, Ill.), Kira Holliday (Roselle, Ill.), and Grace King (Fairland, Ind.) all tallied two steals apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
The Cougars lost the jumpball and gave the Green Knights a chance to score first. After falling behind 5-0 to start the game, the Cougars would break the glass off a fastbreak layup from Cydnei Mitchell (Aurora, Ill.) would officially put them on the board. A 7-0 Green Knight run would leave the Cougars trailing by seven before a pair of free throws from King would once again break the drought for CUC. With the Green Knights keeping their foot on the gas, the Cougars would only see seven additional points in the first quarter off buckets from Hinton-Henry, Whigham, and Alisyn MacGregor (Loves Park, Ill.).

The second quarter told a different tale as the Cougars struck first with a jumper outside the paint from Mitchell followed behind with a layup from Whigham. Cutting their deficit down to as little as six, the Cougar defense was put to work as the Green Knights raged to a 9-0 run to close the half while holding CUC to a mere five points. After the first 20 minutes of play, the Cougars trailed 31-16.

SECOND HALF
The Green Knights showed no mercy in the second half and jumped out to an early 21-point lead. Despite bursts of fresh energy from Destiney Cox (Chicago, Ill.), Courtneye Schneider (Plainfield, Ill.), Alina Paul (Elmwood Park, Ill.), Linley Southern (Decatur, Ill.), and Abby Kulig (Carol Stream, Ill.)  the Cougars closed the third quarter in a 26-point deficit.
With ten minutes to play and a costly lead for the Green Knights, the Cougars would be unable to overcome the deficit and close the game with the 69-43 loss.

The Cougars continue conference play on December 17th as they face their sister-school rival in Concordia University Mequon. Tipoff is slated for 5:00 pm while coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
