Falcons Leave Cougars Feeling Blue

Mequon, Wis. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars women's basketball team traveled to Wisconsin to take on the Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) Falcons in a round of Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) action. The Cougars came out matching the Falcons intensity early in the first quarter but were unable to keep the pace up and fell, where the final score favored the Falcons 70-42. 

 

Inside the Box Score:

  • Commanding on both the offensive and defensive ends, Nazuri Whigham (Naperville, Ill.) had 13 points, four blocks, and two steals.
  • Sydney Nimsakont (Glendale Heights, Ill.) contributed seven points and two rebounds.
  • Destiney Cox (Chicago, Ill.) had her first start of the season, while adding seven points and two steals.
 

Here's What Happened

First Quarter

The Falcons scored on their first possession off of a made three, but the Cougars answered a minute later from a layup by Aniyah Hinton-Henry (Gary, Ind.)

 

 

 

The Falcons replied with a layup of their own, where the Cougars yet again scored, this time from Nimsakont. Taking the lead for the first time, the Cougars pulled ahead by one on a Cox layup, where the score was 6-5. 

 

 

 

From consecutive Whigham and Cox layups the Cougars gained what would be their largest lead of the night, finding themselves ahead three, where the score was 10-7. With six minutes left in the first quarter, the Falcons went on an eight point run where they took the lead and never looked back, where the score was 16-10. The last points of the quarter for the Cougars came from two made free throws from Nimsakont. To close out the quarter, the Falcons went on another eight point run, where the score of the first quarter favored the Falcons, 24-12.

 

Second Quarter

Khaliah Reid (Naperville, Ill.) contributed a three for her season debut to kick off the second quarter, however the Falcons gained nine unanswered points in the next three minutes of play, where their lead increased to 18. 

 

 

 

The score was 33-16. In the next four and a half minutes of game time, the Falcons outscored the Cougars 9-7, where the score was 40-22 with under a minute of play in the first half. With three seconds left in the half, the Falcons scored a layup once more where the score going into halftime was 42-22. 

 

Third Quarter

Less than a minute in the quarter Whigham read a Falcon play perfectly, nabs a steal, and was able to finish on the other end with a layup, making the score 42-24 in favor of the Falcons. 

 

 

 

The Falcons continued to add to their lead where they were able to where in the next five minutes of play, they scored five more points. Abby Kulig (Carol Stream, Ill.) put an end to their scoring streak after she was sent to the free throw line where she went one for two. The only other point for the Cougars came from a free throw by Cox in the last minute and a half of play in the third quarter. After the third quarter, the score favored the Falcons 60-26. 

 

Fourth Quarter

Just like the third quarter, Whigham took charge and off of a driving layup scored first for the Cougars. The following play, Kulig backs her way down to the basket and gets herself and the Cougars another basket. 

 

 

 

Keeping the Falcons scoreless in the fourth quarter, Cougar, Courtneye Schneider (Plainfield, Ill.), knocks down a three. The Cougars were coming alive in the fourth quarter, where in only four and half minutes of game time, they outscored the Falcons 11-4, highlighting a three from Whigham and a layup from Nimsakont.. However, the score still heavily favored the Falcons, where the score was 64-40 with five minutes of play left in the game. The Falcons increased their lead yet again with two more layups, where the score was 68-40 with three minutes left to play. Both teams went scoreless in the next two minutes, until The Falcons scored a layup making the score 70-40. The last points of the game came from Cox off a steal that was finished on the other end with a layup. 

 

 

 

The final score was 70-42, Falcons. 

 

What's Next
