Cougars Fall on Day One of Titan Holiday Classic

Wisconsin Dells, Wis. - Heading across state lines for a holiday tournament for the first time in years, the Concordia University Chicago women's basketball team took on the University of Northwestern in game one of the Titan Holiday Classic. The tournament, hosted by University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, is located in the "Waterpark Capital of the World" in the Wisconsin Dells, Wis.

Inside the Box

  • Khaliah Reid (Naperville, Ill.) led the charge with a season-high 22 points and four steals while also adding in five rebounds and one assist.
  • Aniyah Hinton-Henry (Gary, Ind.) followed behind with a career-high 16 points while shooting six-for-nine from the field.
  • Alisyn MacGregor (Loves Parker, Ill.) led on the defensive end with 11 rebounds while adding in four points and one block. With her 11 rebounds, MacGregor surpassed 800 career rebounds.

How It Happened

First Half

After letting the Eagles strike first, Reid answered back quickly with a jumper of her own. After a second consecutive three for the Eagles kept the score moving quickly, a layup from Destiney Cox (Chicago. Ill) kept the Cougars moving as well. Extending their three-point streak to five consecutive, the Eagles took the 15-8 lead with under five minutes to play in the quarter. Lockdown defense, highlighted by a block from Sydney Nimsakont (Glendale Heights, Ill.) turned fastbreak layup for Hinton-Henry, held the Eagles to eight points in the final five minutes of the quarter, closing out with a 23-17 advantage over the Cougars.

A steal from Reid started off the second quarter with a bang, but unable to capitalize on it the Eagles would strike first yet again. A 5-0 run to start the quarter for UNW would be broke up by a layup from Reid, who would go on to score nine of the 13 CUC points in the quarter. With some fresh legs on the court for the Cougars, layups from Linley Southern (Decatur, Ill.) and Abby Kulig (Carol Stream, Ill.) would account for the remaining four points in the quarter while Reid would close the half out with the CUC's final three pointer of the game.

Second Half

The second half would start slow on both fronts as each would score from the charity stripe to kick things off. In a similar fashion as the second quarter,  half the team's points would come at the hands of one Cougar, this time Hinton-Henry, who grabbed six of her 16 total points in a three minute span. As the Eagles jumped out to as much as a 20 point lead, a jumper from Cox and a layup from Reid would slowly chip that away before ending the third quarter in a 61-42 deficit.

Final points from Reid, MacGregor, Hinton-Henry, and Nimsakont would close the game falling short 80-56. The Cougars face a quick turnaround as they take on day two of the Titan Holiday Classic where they face Augustana College. Tipoff is scheduled for noon and coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
