Perkins Serves Up Success for Cougars Following Career-High Seven Aces

RIVER FOREST, ILL. – The Concordia University Chicago women's volleyball team took the floor inside Geiseman Gymnasium for the first weeknight game at home since September 4th. The Cougars battled with the Eureka College, sweeping the Red Devils 3-0.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Jessalyne Perkins (Chicago, Ill.) led the Cougars with a career-high seven service aces and four blocks.
  • Bethany Roethel (Westby, Wis.) tallied 20 digs on the night while Malainna Adler (Fenton, Mo.) picked up 30 assists.
  • As a team, the Cougars outworked the Red Devils in every statistical category picking up an impressive 39 kills to their 18, 12 aces to their two, and 35 assists to their 17.

SET ONE
The Cougars jumped on the board first after a leadoff kill from Brooke Christensen (Blaine, Minn.) followed up by a service ace from Shaira Marin (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico). The Red Devils would answer back and tally two points of their own before a stretch of kills from Christensen and Akasia Brown (Addison, Ill.) would put the Cougars up by four.

Exchanging points back-and-forth for the better half of the set, the Cougars would remain just above the Red Devils throughout the set. Additional kills from Brown, Christensen, Lili Hunt (Greenfield, Ind.), and Rachel Livesay (Medinah, Ill.) would close the set with a 25-16 victory for the Cougars.

SET TWO
The Cougars would once again strike first in set two with a kill from Perkins to get things going. A 5-0 run from the Cougars would propel them ahead 6-1 after string of errors from the Red Devils would favor CUC.

The Red Devils refused to back down and rallied back to level the score at seven apiece before back-to-back kills from Neva Foster (Parker, Colo.) would put the Cougars up by two.

Another 5-0 run midway through the set would put the Cougars up by six, spearheaded by kills from Foster and Perkins, an ace from Marin, and a block from Christensen and Perkins. With the Red Devils picking up a point the Cougars would dominate and go on a 6-0, three of which were off service aces from Perkins. With another point from the Red Devils breaking up the Cougars' scoring streak, a final 4-0 run would close the set with the 25-11 victory.

SET THREE
Ruffling the score streak in set three, the Red Devils would strike first and jump to a 1-0 lead over the Cougars. Answering rather quickly, a kill from Eve Dicken (St. Louis, Mo.) would level the score. Two consecutive points for the Red Devils would put them ahead of the Cougars once again, but a strong response from the Cougar offense would rocket them ahead by three.

Following a familiar pattern, the Red Devils would steal a point and interrupt the Cougar offense, but three consecutive aces from Perkins would not only extend the Cougars further ahead, but keep momentum with the Cougars as well.

Bouncing points back-and-forth for a stretch, kills from Dicken, Christensen, and Adler would put the Cougars ahead by ten. Inching closer to the 25 point mark, the Cougars would put the dagger in the Devils with a monster kill from Christensen to complete the 3-0 sweep.

The Cougar will face a quick turnaround as they host the Benedictine Eagles on Thursday, October 3rd for a 6:00 pm opening serve. Coverage can be found at cuocugars.com/coverage.
