Cougars Slam Down Eagles Effort For Comeback

RIVER FOREST, ILL. --- After a long weekend at the Concordia Invitational Tournament, the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars return to Geiseman Gymnasium to take on the Edgewood College Eagles. The Cougars would ultimately defeat the Eagles in their attempted comeback 88-69.

 

Box Score

  • Jacob Collicott (Lafayette, Ind.) led the offensive side of things for the Cougars with a career-high-tying 29 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.

  • Jordan Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) would follow this with 18 points and seven rebounds. 

 

First Half

The Eagles initiated the game scoring the first shot 2-0. Justin Greenlee (Brown Deer, Wis.) and Collicott responded to this swiftly with a jumper and layup bringing the score 4-2. Collicott drove into the paint following this 6-4. Brent Hatten (Olney, Ill.) added his name to the board shortly after from deep to bring three points for the Cougars 9-4.

Matthews would draw a foul for the Cougars after the Eagles scored to bring the lead back to five 11-6. The duo of Matthews and Hatten would bring eight points for the Cougars by shooting in the paint and three-point range 19-9. The Eagles would try to reduce this ten-point lead by Collicott and would continue this gap in the paint 21-11.

Collicott would continue to add points to his name through fastbreaks and jumpers bringing the Cougars lead to 28-13. William Bishop-Green (Chicago, Ill.) would follow this by adding six points for the Cougars by drawing a foul and shooting from deep 34-13.

Hatten drove into the paint, driving the Cougars lead 36-13. Bishop-Green followed suit with a layup of his own 38-13. The Eagles would break their scoreless run by adding four points to the board 38-17. Matthews and Collicott responded to this with four points by a jumper and dunk respectively 42-17. 

Joel Watts (Homewood, Ill.) would end the half for the Cougars at the free throw line 44-27.

Second Half

Matthews would start the half for the Cougars by drawing a foul. He would add two points for the Cougars at the line 46-27. Collicott would follow this, laying the ball in twice 50-31. The Eagles, hoping to reduce this lead, brought the score 50-36. However, Matthews from three-point range would halt their efforts 53-40.

Bishop-Green from three-point range would draw another three points for the Cougars 58-40. Facing a comeback from the Eagles, the pair of Collicott and Hatten would add four points for the Cougars 64-46.

The duo of Collicott and Watts would shoot from three-point range bringing the lead 72-51. The Eagles would score five points to reduce the Cougars to 72-56. Collicott would be fouled as he scored allowing him to add three points for the Cougars 75-56. The Eagles would again, add five points to the board to try to reduce the Cougars lead. 

The likes of Matthews and Collicott would bring six points for the Cougars in response to the Eagles attempt to lower the lead to 81-63. Will Wainscott (Oswego, Ill.) followed this up from three-point range. Ben Gordos (Manchester, England) would end the game for the Cougars by drawing two fouls and adding four points from the free throw line bringing the total 88-69. The Cougars would defeat the Eagles with a final score of 88-69.
