Offense Falters In Loss To Warriors

RIVER FOREST, ILL. — The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars took on the Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors at Geiseman Gymnasium in preparation for the Concordia Invitational Tournament (CIT). However, the Cougars would ultimately fall to the Warriors 74-28.


Inside the Box Score:
  • Alexis Desjarlait (Red Lake, Minn.) led the offense with five points
  • Nazuri Whigham (Naperville, Ill.) picked up three steals on the night
  • Amaya Martin (Issaquah, Wash.) was the rebound leader on the night with six
 

First Half

The Warriors opened the game at the free throw line, swiftly Desjarlait scored with a jumper 2-1. However, the Warriors followed this by going on a huge run, bringing the score to 9-2 WLC. Desjarlait would not allow this as she drove into the paint forcing a foul and the Cougars out of their rut 9-5.

The Warriors would respond rapidly, bringing their lead 13-6. Whigham would draw a foul adding her name to the board. The Warriors would end the first quarter up 15-6. The second quarter would see the Warriors continue their onslaught forcing zero baskets for the Cougars 34-6.

Second Half

Alisyn MacGregor (Loves Park, Ill.) would force a foul in the paint to bring the Cougars out of their scoring rut 48-8. Prentciss Gates (Gary, Ind.) followed this up with a jumper in the paint 50-10. Martin added her name to the board for the Cougars with a contested layup 52-12.

Kayla Jackson (Worth, Ill.) from the paint would reduce the Warriors lead to 54-15. Janie Ternes (Oak Lawn, Ill.) would draw a foul forcing a point from the free throw line. She would then follow this up with a drive into the paint 57-18. The Warriors would close out the quarter against the Cougars 59-18. 

Linley Southern (Decatur, Ill.) was able to break through for some points, bringing the Cougars closer at 61-20. This would be followed by Abby Kulig (Carol Stream, Ill.) with a jumper 61-22.

Martin forced a foul allowing her to bring the score to 70-23. Alina Paul (Elmwood Park, Ill.) had a deep shot for three and forced the score to 70-26. Emily Balaban (Manitowoc, Wis.) then drew a foul for the Cougars resulting in two free throws 72-28. 

The Cougars would ultimately fall to the Warriors 74-28.

The Cougars are on the road to Concordia University Wisconsin on Jan. 25 to compete in the Concordia Invitational Tournament. Their first game is against the Concordia University Wisconsin Eagles at 6:00 p.m. Coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
