Regents Roll Past the Cougars In NACC Play

The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's volleyball team (4-6, 0-0) hosted the visiting Rockford University Regents (RU) (4-3, 0-0) in a Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) matchup. After battling hard in this match up, the Cougars fell to the Regents 3-1.

Inside the Box Score:
Grace Heywood (Northbrook, Ill.) continued to be a dominant force in tonight's match with 21 kills and 23 digs.
Kate Foley (Milwaukee, Wis.) made her presence known tonight. The sophomore recorded nine kills and eight digs.
Isabelle Vernengo (Plainfield, Ind.) was impressive tonight dishing out 45 assists and 20 digs.

First Set
The Cougars were the first to strike with a quick 3-0 run to start the match, with two aces coming from
Rachel Livesay (Medinah, Ill.). The Regents had an answer of their own by getting two points.
After going back and forth, a Cougar rally was able to bring the score to 11-8. The Regents were not going down without a fight, and managed to bounce back, leading to a tied score of 15 apiece. The Rockford Regents continued to go on a run, which led to a Cougar timeout.
The Cougars never backed down and managed to overcome a deficit, only now trailing by two with a score of 24-22. After a hard fought first set on both ends, the Regents take the 1-0 lead in the match.

Second Set
Starting the second set of the match, the Regents came out hot with two points. However, an
Akasia Brown (Addison, Ill.) kill was the spark that started the Cougar offense. Momentum from Rockford began to strike, but the Cougars offense and defense began to take charge leading to a Regent timeout.
The Cougar run continued to take over with a kill and block from Brown. Vernengo also got into the action with a kill of her own. The Cougars never looked back and were able to lead the second set with a score of 20-16, leading to another Rockford timeout.
The Cougars came out on fire following the timeout with easy points of their own, but the Regents kept them on their toes with defensive stops. With an
Eve Dicken (St, Louis. Mo.) kill, the Cougars were able to take the second set with a score of 25-21. The match is now tied with one set a piece.

Third Set
Heading into the third set, the Cougars managed to go on a 4-0 run that led to a speedy Rockford timeout. The Regents cooled down the hot Cougar run by going on one themselves. A Heywood kill helped rebuild the momentum for the Cougars.
However, Rockford was able to bounce back and pull away with a score of 15-12, leading to a Cougar timeout. Regents strong offensive presence was able to pull away by going on another run, but the Cougars began chipping more into the deficit. With the comeback of the lifetime that had Geiseman hyped, the Regents secured the third set with a score of 26-24. The Regents are leading the match 2-1.

Fourth Set
The Cougars came back with a vengeance and led the fourth set 6-1. A couple miscommunications led to a Regent comeback with the score tied at 7-7.
With great plays coming from both sides of the court, the Regents again were able to pull away with a 4 point lead. The Cougars refused to quit and managed to keep the deficit within two. The Regents proceeded to not let off the gas and went on a 4-0 run.
However, kills from Foley and Heywood had the Regents too stunned to speak. The Cougars proceeded to come with a lot of energy and powerful kills from Kirsten Brockhurst (Union, Mo.). As this fourth set was a battle from beginning to end, the Regents took the final set with a score of 30-28.

The Cougars will continue play this Friday as they travel to Manchester, Indiana to compete in the Manchester Tournament. They will play Alma College on Friday at 6 p.m EST and Manchester University at 8 p.m EST. On Saturday, the Cougars will take on Bluffton University at 11 a.m EST and Franklin College at 1 p.m EST.
