Britons Overpower Cougars

RIVER FOREST, ILL. – The Concordia University Chicago men's soccer team took the field for one last non-conference matchup before starting Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play. The Cougars played host to the Britons of Albion College, falling 6-1.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Joseph Perez (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Kyle Schultz (Hampshire, Ill.) split time in the net while grabbing three and five saves, respectively.
  • Spencer Nicholson (Fort Collins, Colo.) netted the lone Cougar goal of the day off a corner kick.
  • Garrett Poynter (Noblesville, Ind.) led the offense with five total shots, three of which were on goal.

Looking for the first win of the season, the Cougars started out the game with intensity. Forced to play heavy defense against a strong Briton offense, the Cougars got physical fast. A foul from Alexander Lechowicz (Chicago, Ill.) would give the Britons a free kick from the 13-yard line where they'd be able to find the bottom left corner of the net and take an early 1-0 lead. Despite the opportunity for an equalizer just minutes later, the Cougars were unable to find the back of the net off their first corner kick of the game. Perez was able to get a fist on an Albion cross from the far side, but unable to control it the Britons followed up and put the ball in the bottom right corner.

Already facing a 2-0 deficit, the Cougars were only able to get two shots off for the remainder of the half while the Britons increased their lead to four.

With fresh legs coming out of the half, the Cougars took advantage of an early corner kick. A perfectly placed ball from Giovanni Velasquez (Cicero, Ill.) would slip through the hands of Briton keeper Dario Vujic and find the left foot of Nicholson who would put it away in the lower left corner.

Despite picking up some momentum after cutting the deficit to 4-1 the Cougars were unable to hold off the Britons and ultimately would fall 6-1. The Cougars sit at 0-4-0 overall before jumping into NACC play on Wednesday. They'll head over to Rockford, Ill. to take on the Regents of Rockford University with kickoff slated for 7:00pm.
