Cougars Split with Eagles at The Thunderdome

RIVER FOREST, ILL. -- Continuing in the heart of Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars took on the Edgewood College Eagles, splitting the series.

GAME ONE
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Christian Jacob led the offense going two-for-three at the plate while picking up two RBIs and one stolen base.
  • Elijah Hickman and Michael Kasik followed behind, each going two-for-four at the plate while Kasik secured two RBIs.
  • Westin Stutzman picked up his fourth win this season as he pitched seven complete innings with a career-tying eight strikeouts.
  • Jacob picked up his first save from the mound today, closing the ninth inning out with one strikeout and no runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles took the early 1-0 lead after picking up a run in the top of the first inning. Unable to convert back, the Cougars saw three batters at the plate before heading back to the defensive side.
  • Holding the score stagnant at 1-0 for a few innings, the Cougars finally tied things up in the bottom of the third after a triple to center field from Hickman followed by a single to second base from Jacob would secure their first run of the day.
  • With both teams not putting up impressive offensive bouts, the Cougars finally took the lead in the bottom of the sixth after hits from Tyler Krater and Caleb Anderson would get senior Garry Maynard across the plate.
  • With the momentum finally on the Cougars' side, they found their explosiveness in the bottom of the seventh after Jaime Sandoval, Jacob, Tyler Dorsch, and Garry Maynard all found their way on base. A two-run homer from Kasik to close out the inning would give the Cougars the 7-1 lead.
  • As the Cougars struggled on the mound to close the game, the Eagles were able to tack on a few more runs before Jacob would close the game with a strikeout.
HIGHLIGHTS GAME TWO
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Hickman led the offense for the Cougars going two-for-three at the plate with a solo homerun on the day.
  • Maynard also picked up a solo homerun on the day while going one-for-two at the plate.
  • Four Cougars took the mound in game two as Aidan Teahan, Sammy Valdez, Dax Meyer, and Bryce Jones all took time on the bump.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Similar to game one, the Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the Cougars. A solo homerun from Maynard in the bottom of the first would even things up for a few innings before the Eagles would start to fight back.
  • A six-run inning for the Eagles shifted the momentum away from the Cougars as the defense struggled to get some outs.
  • The Cougars wouldn't score again until the bottom of the eighth, where a solo homerun from Hickman would give a glimmer of hope, but ultimately the Cougar offense couldn't combat the Eagles, falling 9-2.
