Becky Pieroni (Montgomery, Ill.), Melisa Hadzic (Westchester, Ill.), and Jessica Geng (Phoenix, Ariz.) all recorded multi-hit games
-
Pieroni, Hadzic, and Nikita Robbins (Lafayette, Ind.) all stole themselves doubles as well
The bats were hot in game one as the Cougars started their action in the second inning. Hadzic started with a double to right field to set herself up in scoring position. Geng then singled to center and promptly scored Hadzic to go up 1-0. Robbins then sent a ball into field to score Geng and the Cougars were then leading 2-0.
With runners on, the Eagles had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the second. But after some heads up plays from the Cougars, they turned a double play to halt the Eagles in their path.
The bats were on fire in the third, as CUC scored six runs in the inning. Geng singled to right field to score Arissa Santos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and start the rally 3-0. Haley Gulsby (Englewood, Fla.) caused some havoc with a ball in play that scored Hadzic 4-0. Promptly after, Robbins beat out a double and was able to score another Cougar 5-0.
With the bases full of Cougars, Gina Westphal (Elmhurst, Ill.) took her opportunity to single to center field and score another run 6-0. Then some heads up baserunning from Pieroni and Robbins got them the last two runs of the game 8-0.
In the circle, Shroll truly settled in and put down the last three batters in order to finish the game in five innings. The Cougars took the first game over the Eagles in five innings 8-0.
Game Two
Inside The Box Score:
-
Each going 3-for-4 were Santos, Geng, and Annabella Archuletta (Pueblo, Colo.). Geng picked up a double and Archuletta launched her second long ball of the season
-
Archuletta also led the way in RBIs with a total of three
-
Jaidyn Harris (Jurupa Valley, Calif.) had her third win in the circle, going 2.2 innings with four hits allowed. Shroll secured her fourth save of the season with 3.2 innings with three hits allowed and three strikeouts
This game started out very differently for the Cougars, as the Eagles looked for revenge. In the bottom of the first, Edgewood quickly went up 3-0 to take the lead. In the top of the second, Santos singled to get on base, but was stranded and the score stayed 3-0. The Eagles then scored two more runs and had a hefty lead of 5-0.
Revving up their engines, the Cougars busted open the score in the top of the third. A couple of runners got on base and CUC was ready to pounce. Santos singled to left center and both Pieroni and Kallie Tierney (Corona, Calif.) would score to cut the lead to 5-2. Right after, Archuletta singled to right field and two more Cougars crossed the plate to bring them within one run 5-4.
Edgewood responded quickly with another run scored and stayed in front 6-4. However, CUC was ready with a rebuttal as they took advantage of some Eagles miscues to score another run 6-5. Then, Hadzic singled to center field and Westphal and Gulsby scored to finally take the lead 7-6.
With Shroll coming in to relieve Harris, the Cougar defense kept the Eagles from scoring and stayed in the lead. Archuletta sent a moonshot to left field to stomp down their lead 8-6.
Finally, Hailey Howard had a pinch hit double to left field to score Geng and solidify the score 9-6. The Cougars took game two and the sweep over the Eagles 9-6.
