Cougars Split Day One at the Rebel Springs Tournament

WINTER HAVEN, FLA. -- On day one of Concordia University Chicago's stint in the 2023 Rebel Springs Games, the Cougars split the day after falling to Muskingum in game one and reigning victorious in game two against Simmons.

GAME ONE
After taking a week-long hiatus, the Cougars took the field in the Sunshine State and got to work as they spent the first inning scoreless. With Emma Borrelli (Arlington Heights, Ill.) inside the circle for the Cougars, they fell behind 1-0. The Cougars were unable to keep up with the Fighting Muskies and fell to a 5-0 deficit. Late in the second inning, a hit to right field from Becky Pieroni (Montgomery, Ill.) would send Hailey Howard (Machesney Park, Ill.) home and give the Cougars their only run of the game.

Despite grabbing some momentum after the initial run, the Cougars were unable to keep the Fighting Muskies at bay and fell 12-1.

GAME TWO
The Cougars got on the board first in game two as they jumped to a 1-0 lead after a single to right field from Annabella Archuletta (Pueblo, Colo.) sent Howard home. One batter later, a single to right center from Melisa Hadzic (Westchester, Ill.) would allow Pieroni and Arissa Santos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) to cross the plate and take a 3-0 lead before a single from Gina Westphal (Elmhurst, Ill.) would allow Archuletta to score and give the four point advantage heading into the bottom of the first.

Allowing one run in the bottom of the first, the Cougars responded in the top of the second following a massive double from Pieroni and an error from the Sharks would put the Cougars up 5-1. A wild pitch would give Pieroni the opportunity to cross the plate and give the Cougars the five run lead.

Sitting stagnant for a few innings, the Cougars allowed the Sharks to jump back in and bring the game within one run before the Cougars found themselves back at the plate in the top of the fifth. In the top of the sixth consecutive hits from Howard, Santos, and Pieroni would bump the Cougars up to 9-5. With Jessica Geng (Phoenix, Ariz.) at the plate, the Cougars would grab their last run of the day as Hadzic was able to score.

Going a full seven innings, sophomore Ashley Shroll (Tampa, Fla.) closed the game for the Cougars with the 10-5 win. The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday, March 7th as they take on Roanoke College and Saint Vincent College. Coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
