DANVILLE, KY. – On their final day in Kentucky to close their three game series, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars fell to the Centre College Colonels 9-6.
Inside the Box
- Christian Jacob (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led the Cougars with three hits on four at bats while driving in two runs and picking up two stolen bases.
- Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.) followed behind while also going three-for-four at the plate.
- Wyatt McLaughlin (Cave Creek, Ariz.) worked on the mound for six full innings while only giving up five runs and securing three strikeouts.
In an attempt to bounce back after yesterday's second game loss, the Cougars came out swinging in the top of the first. Unfortunately, the Cougars were unable to make contact and three consecutive strikeouts would force the Cougars into the defensive side. McLaughlin delivered some of the same back to the Colonels and two strikeouts and a groundout to Jacob at second base would keep the first inning scoreless.
Looking to strike first, Krater dropped his first double of the day to centerfield while a follow-up single from
Caleb Anderson (Plainfield, Ill.) would move Krater to third. A wild throw to second base would give Krater the time to cross home and put the Cougars on the board first.
The Colonels evened the score with the Cougars late in the bottom of the second while eventually jumping to a 2-1 lead. An RBI from
Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) would tie things up at two apiece.
Needing some momentum, another double from Krater would provide the spark needed. A single from
Carter Gledhill (Arlington Heights, Ill.) would bring in two runs and give the Cougars their largest lead yet. A single from
Jaime Sandoval (Oak Lawn, Ill.) immediately following would put two on base with Jacob at the plate. A single to right field from Jacob would drive in two runs and the Cougars would jump out to a 6-2 lead that they'd hold onto until the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Colonels would start their climb back and cut the Cougar lead down to one in the bottom of the sixth. Unable to pick up any additional runs, the Cougars were forced to focus on defense to try and hold off the Colonels, but a runaway bottom of the eighth inning would allow the Colonels to take the lead by three and ultimately down the Cougars 9-6.
The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday, March 28 2023, as they head to Wheaton College for their last game before conference play starts. Coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
