First Half Defense Could Not Secure Cougar Win

FOND DU LAC, WIS. — October has arrived for the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's soccer team, as they traveled to Marian University for a night cap game. After holding off the Sabres in the first half, the Cougars were defeated with a score of 3-0.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Joseph Perez (Crystal Lake, Ill.) tallied four saves against the Sabres

  • Three total Cougars had shots on goal in this match

First Half

The first half of the game was nothing short of a defensive blockade on both sides. Neither team would be able to score a goal in the first 45 minutes of play, but both competitors found opportunities to create havoc. In the 19th minute, Spencer Nicholson (Fort Collins, Colo.) would be the first player of the game to get shot on goal, but was stopped by the Sabres goalkeeper. Directly after, Marian tried to make an opportunity for themselves, but were swiftly stopped by J.Perez in net.

Perez would get two more saves to close the half, as the Cougars kept this game scoreless. Nicholson would also move his way down field to try and make the first goal of the game, but came up just short. The Cougars and Sabres would be tied 0-0 going into the half.

Second Half

The Sabres would make the best of their situation to open up the second half. After drawing a penalty goal, they were able to score on the Cougars to take a 1-0 lead. CUC would then try to make a drive of their own when Giovanni Velasquez (Cicero, Ill.) got a shot on goal, but it would not make it past Marian.

The two teams would trade off on shots, but neither would be on target just yet. That was until the 70th minute, when Marian scored their second goal of the day 2-0. Trying to start something for the Cougars, Elias De Santiago (Chicago, Ill.) got a shot on goal, but would just come shy of scoring.

With just about 30 seconds remaining, the Sabres would score their third and final goal of the night to make it 3-0. The Cougars would take the loss against the Sabres with a final score of 3-0.

The Cougars will be back in Wisconsin this weekend, as they travel to the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff. Coverage for all of our sports can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
