RIVER FOREST, ILL. – The Concordia University Chicago women's soccer team closed out their 2023 campaign after a hard-fought match against their Division Street Rivals left them without a spot in the conference tournament.
INSIDE THE BOX
FIRST HALF
The Cougars were put to the defensive test from the jump after three consecutive shots from the Stars within five minutes. Burnell made her first save of the day six minutes in before Fernandez would get the first shot off for the Cougars. Halfway through the first half, the Stars would be able to find the back of the net and secure their 1-0 advantage early on.
With some fresh faces in the game for the Cougars, they would be able to produce three consecutive corner kicks in an attempt to build their offensive efforts. Despite one shot from Loza, the Cougars were unable to convert on any attempts and would head into the half with a 1-0 deficit.
SECOND HALF
Continuing to utilize their offense, the Cougars would find themselves with another corner kick opportunity ten minutes into the half. Unable to connect and get the shot off, the Cougars would turn to their defense to keep them fighting in the game. Burnell would find five of her seven saves in the second half and keep the Cougars within one.
Unable to find the back of the net in the second 45, the Cougars would fall to the Stars 1-0. This concludes the 2023 season as the Cougars narrowly miss the Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference tournament. They finish the season with a 3-12-3 overall record and a 4-7-2 conference record.
