RIVER FOREST, ILL. --- The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's volleyball team (9-11, 0-0) hosted the Dominican Stars (8-10, 0-0) in a Division Street rivalry match. In what was an exciting matchup from beginning to end the Cougars were able to take down the Stars 3-0.
Inside the Box Score
- Grace Heywood (Northbrook, Ill.)Â was a dominant force on all areas of the court tonight. The fifth year recorded 12 digs, 11 kills and two service aces.
- Akasia Brown (Addison, Ill.)Â made her presence known in tonight's matchup with nine kills, three kills and two blocks.
- Isabelle Vernengo (Plainfield, Ind.)Â recorded 31 assists, 13 digs and one kill.
Set One
The Cougars started off on fire with a 9-0 run with 5 service aces coming from
Bethany Roethel (Westby, Wis.). This led to a quick Dominican timeout.
The Stars continued to fire back with two points of their own, but the Cougars offense was not letting up and managed to respond with easy points. With an easy kill from Heywood, the Cougars now lead with a score of 14-9. With a service ace coming from Hunt and a kill from Brown, Dominican again called for another timeout.
Following the Stars timeout, Dominican were able to get offensive and defensive stops leading to a major comeback, only being within two. After a dominant start and a Heywood kill, the Cougars will take the first set with a score of 25-22. They now have a 1-0 lead to start the match.
Set Two
The Cougars again stuck first by getting the first point of the second set. Dominican had a response and continued to go back and forth for the next few points of the match. Following a few miscommunications, the Stars were able to build their first lead of the game with a score of 6-4.
However, a
Lili Hunt (Greenfield, Ind.)Â kill helped give the Cougars a change in momentum.
A
Katie Haidl (St. Charles, Ill.)Â service ace were able to bring the Cougars to a tie in the set with a score of 11-11. With offensive blocks and service ace by Heywood, the Cougars were able to get their first lead of the set with a score of 17-13 and cause another Dominican timeout. Out of the timeout, the Stars were able to cut the deficit. In what was a battle from start to finish, the Cougars pulled off the second set win with a score of 25-23. The Cougars now lead the match with a 2-0 lead.
Set Three
Off a Stars miscommunication, the Cougars were able to secure the first point of the set. It did not stop there as they were able to build a 5-2 lead. The Stars were not backing down, as they managed to get offensive kills of their own to cut the deficit down to two. Another Brown kill helped the Cougars pull away with a four point lead.
McKayla LeVoy (Kankakee, Ill.)Â got in on the action with a kill and block of her own. The Dominican stops had the score tied at 16 a piece and eventually led to a Cougars timeout. The Cougars came out with a vengeance as they were able to score three points out of the gate, leading to a Stars timeout. As the Cougars defensive stops were too hot to handle for the Stars, CUC was able to secure the third set win with a score of 25-19. The Cougars were able to take the match 3-0.
