Cougars Split Last Regular Season Road Series With Dominican

SCHAUMBIRG, Ill. --- Hitting the road for the second to last Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) doubleheader of the year, the Concordia University Chicago baseball team took on the Dominican University Stars on Saturday afternoon. Three Cougars allowed just one unearned run as CUC picked up a 3-1 win in ten innings to open the day. Dominican then answered with a six-run fourth inning in game two to down CUC 6-1.

GAME ONE
Jack Rector got the ball to open the day for CUC. The sophomore put together a near flawless start for Concordia, throwing five shutout innings while allowing just four hits and striking out six. The Cougars put one run across to grab the lead in the top of the fourth. Michael Zavoli led off the inning with a bunt single. One out later Zavoli stole second to get into scoring position. He then came around to score when Brody Mariotti dropped a RBI single into right field.

Vincent Sartori got the ball for CUC in the sixth, working four innings, allowing just one unearned run in the ninth while striking out five. Dominican plated the tying run in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but CUC had an answer in the top of the tenth.

Concordia plated two runs in the top of the tenth. Aidan Donovan led off the inning with a single up the middle. After a sac bunt put one in scoring position, Garry Maynard reached on an infield single to put runners at the corners. CUC then put their aggressive base running in motion, scoring the go-ahead run on a double steal. The Cougars then made it 3-1 when Cooper Hynes singled through the left side scoring Maynard.

Mike Tobin took the ball for CUC in the bottom of the tenth. The right hander worked around a two out walk to pick up his fourth save of the year.

GAME TWO
The Cougars jumped on the Stars in the top of the first. Elijah Hickman opened the inning drawing a walk. He then stole second and advanced to third on a Donovan single to center. CUC then put Donovan in motion, and Hickman was able to score during the play.

The score stayed the same until the bottom of the fourth. Dominican plated six runs on four hits in the inning, and were aided on two CUC walks in the inning.

Wyatt McLaughlin and Cole Carman combined to work four and two thirds innings of scoreless relief for CUC. The two allowed just four hits while striking out four.

The Cougars will be back in action on Monday afternoon for the regular season finale. First pitch against Marian is set for 12:30pm from River Forest. You can find links to coverage at cucougars.com/coverage.
