MEQUON, Wis. --- The Concordia University Chicago baseball team took on the Edgewood College Eagles on Friday morning in an elimination game of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament. The CUC pitching staff gave the Cougars a chance all day long, giving up just one earned run, but Edgewood came back with a run in the ninth and a run in the tenth to eliminate the Cougars by a final score of 4-3.
The Cougars got on the board in the top of the first.
Elijah Hickman led off the inning with a single to right. One out later a walk put two in scoring position. After a pop-out
Kevin Garcia singled through the left side scoring Hickman.
Edgewood answered back in the bottom of the first, picking up two unearned runs on three hits and one CUC error.
Westin Stutzman kept the score at 2-1 through the next three innings. He gave way to
Wyatt McLaughlin who kept the Cougars in it by throwing five shutout innings, allowing just two hits.
CUC reclaimed the lead in the top of the eighth. With one out
Brody Mariotti singled through the left side. One out later with a runner on second Edgewood was unable to secure the final out of the inning when the catcher's throw down to first went into right field. Concordia added on one more in the inning when
Christian Jacob singled up the middle scoring
Colton Wallace.
Edgewood was able to plate one unearned run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. The Eagles then ended the CUC season in the bottom of the tenth, getting a walk-off single to right-center with the bases loaded.
Stutzman got the start for CUC and worked three innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits. He gave way to McLaughlin who worked five scoreless innings. The sophomore finishes the season not allowing an earned run in his last 14 innings of work.
Mike Tobin and
Vincent Sartori also appeared out of the bullpen and combined to allow just one earned run.
