Cougars Drop NACC Opener to MSOE

Franklin, Wis. — Hitting the road for the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) opener, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars took on the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders on Sunday afternoon. The Cougars got the offense going early in game one, but a late MSOE run spoiled the opener for CUC 6-5. In game two CUC found themselves in a 5-0 hole early and were unable to climb out, falling 8-3 to close out the day.

GAME ONE
The Cougars got their offense going in the top of the first. With two outs Gary Maynard doubled on a 2-1 pitch. A few pitches later Brody Mariotti doubled to bring in Maynard for the 1-0 lead. CUC made it 2-0 in the second. Eli Hickman led the inning off with a single. Two outs later with Hickman on third Howie Hatton singled home Hickman.

That score held until the bottom of the fifth. A single and a hit batter opened the inning for MSOE. That started a string of hits, where MSOE was able to plate five runs in the inning to take a 5-2 lead.

CUC was able to pull even again in the top of the seventh. Hatton led off the inning with a triple on an 0-1 pitch. An error followed scoring Hatton while putting a runner at first. One out later Mariotti hit a high towering shot over the center-field fence, tying the game at five. CUC threatened more in the inning, with two on, but a lineout to left ended the threat.

MSOE pushed what proved to be the winning run across in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs a hit after putting a runner on. Two singles followed, plating the go-ahead run for MSOE.

Cole Carman worked five innings for CUC, allowing five runs on eight hits. Chandler Kerr took the loss after allowing one run in two innings of work. Vincent Sartori worked a scoreless eighth inning, working around a walk and a hit.

GAME TWO
The big inning of the game came for MSOE in the bottom of the first. With one out and a runner on first, three straight singles scored two for the Raiders. MSOE didn't stop there, getting a double in the inning scoring three more to extend the Raider lead to 5-0.

Concordia pulled closer in the fourth. With one out Mariotti singled to get a runner on. Hickman followed with a single of his own to put two on. Kevin Garcia then provided the fireworks for CUC with a homer to left-center to pull the Cougars within 5-3.

MSOE added on an insurance run on a double in the fifth to extend their lead to 6-3. They then added on two more in the bottom of the eighth on two hits to pull ahead 8-3.

Michael Kasik took the loss, working an inning in his start. Jack Rector threw four innings of one-run ball in relief. Chris VIllafuerte three two innings of scoreless relief, and Mike Tobin gave up one earned in his one inning of work.

The Cougars will be in action again on Monday afternoon when the newest NACC member St.Norbert makes the trip to River Forest for the NACC home opener. Links can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
