Big Pitching Effort Leads CUC Past Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. --- Behind six and two-thirds innings of no-hit ball on the mound, the Concordia University Chicago baseball team picked up a 5-1 non-conference road win over the Carthage College Firebirds on Tuesday afternoon. CUC got all the runs they would need for the day in the first, then used a combination of six pitchers to down the Firebirds.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Garry Maynard led the offense with two hits and three RBIs.
  • Christian Jacob also had two hits for CUC.
  • A total of six pitchers were used for the non-conference contest.
Zach Litke and Sammy Valdez got the big day for CUC started on the mound with each working two innings without allowing a base runner. While those two were dealing on the mound, the CUC bats gave Concordia the lead in the top of the first. A walk and two hit batters opened the game, loading the bases for CUC. A sac fly and a double steal then made it 2-0 Cougars.

Sammy Habayeb came on in the fifth, getting the first batter of the inning to fly out before a walk gave the Firebirds their first baserunner of the day. He worked out of trouble getting a strikeout and fly out to end the inning. He then worked through the sixth.

CUC added on three insurance runs in the top half of the sixth. With two outs Howie Hatton singled up the middle. A walk followed, putting two on. Michael Zavoli then singled to center scoring Hatton. He was able to advance to second when the throw went home, setting the stage for Garry Maynard. The junior delivered with a single to center scoring two, extending the CUC lead to 5-0.

Mike Tobin came on in relief in the seventh, getting an initial groundout before a bloop single dropped in right-center for the first hit of the day. Tobin then got a double-play ball to get out of the seventh.

Carthage tried to make things interesting in the ninth where they scored their only run of the day, but Vincent Sartori was able to come in and close the door, earning his first save of the season.

The Cougars return to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on Saturday afternoon against Benedictine University. First pitch is set for noon from River Forest. You can find links to coverage at cucougars.com/coverage.
