Late Rally Downs CUC Softball

RIVER FOREST, Ill.--- Matching up against Division Street rival Dominican University, the Concordia University Chicago softball team took to the CUC Softball Field on a windy Thursday morning. CUC struck first and took a one-run lead to the seventh but Dominican was able to plate three runs in the seventh to down CUC 5-3.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-          Becky Pieroni hit her team-leading fourth homer of the season. She also had all three RBIs in the contest.
-          Holly Bathje pitched all seven innings, allowing three earned runs on 13 hits with two strikeouts.
-          Annabella Archuletta and Sydney Sterrett both reached base twice.

Pieroni got the day started with a bang in the bottom of the first. With two outs and a 1-1 count, the junior lifted a ball high over the centerfield wall for her fourth homer of the season.

Dominican answered back with two of their own in the top of the second. With two outs an infield single and an error would cost CUC two runs as Dominican came into score. The Cougars worked to tie the game up at two in the bottom of the third. Sterrett led off the inning with a walk. Hailey Howard followed with a single through the left side. Tegan Oas was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. A fielder's choice off the bat of Pieroni then tied the game at two. CUC was unable to add any more in the inning.

CUC took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth.  Sterrett led off with an infield single and promptly stole second. One out later a sac bunt put Sterrett at third with two away. It then was Pieroni again who was able to drive home a run with an infield single, giving CUC a 3-2 lead.

However, Dominican was able to fight back to take the lead for good in the seventh. Two singles started off the inning for the Stars. One out later a third single in the inning loaded the bases. A sac fly tied the game before two straight singles for Dominican extended their lead to 5-3. CUC was unable to rally in the ninth, going out in order.

The Cougars will be right back in action Saturday afternoon when Edgewood College comes to River Forest. First pitch is set for 12:00pm. You can find links to coverage at cucougars.com/coverage.
