Cougars Start NACC Play With Win Over Falcons

MEQUON, WIS. — The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's basketball team traveled to Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) to take on the Falcons. Opening up Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play, the Cougars defeated the Falcons in an exciting matchup with a score of 87-85. This is the first time that CUC has defeated CUW in back-to-back seasons since the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Four Cougars produced double-digit points on the night

  • Emanuel Wilson (Wheaton, Ill.) led the Cougars offensively with 18 points, while also going four for six at the free throw line

  • Brent Hatten (Olney, Ill.) and Justin Greenlee (Brown Deer, Wis.) both led the team with four assists

  • Jordan Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) had four steals and both Greenlee and Jacob Collicott (Lafayette, Ind.) had six rebounds apiece.

This game from the very beginning was a back and forth battle as the sister schools went head-to-head in the matchup. Both Collicott and Hatten found ways to make points as they started off the scoring for the game. Wilson joined the dynamic duo as they began the scoring rally for the Cougars 11-8. Falling behind in the score, Matthews took it upon himself to tie the game back up at 14 each.

After this score from Matthews, CUW went on a streak of points and started to take the momentum from CUC. Matthews and Elijah White (Sheboygan, Wis.) came back with back-to-back points in order to bring the Cougars back into it with a score of 21-25. Hatten fed one to Collicott as the Cougars continued to try and chip away at the Falcons lead. Going into the half, Greenlee led the Cougars in a buzzer beater shot to finish the first half with a score of 38-41.

CUC continued to try and bite back at the lead that CUW had made. Jackson Holzheimer (Sheboygan, Wis.) stepped up to really close the gap with a three pointer to make the score 47-48. William Bishop-Green (Chicago, Ill.) followed suit right afterwards to add on to the three-point party. The Cougars finally found their way in front thanks to a Matthews layup to make the score 56-54. Wilson tacked on to his incredible point performance as he kept the three pointers coming for the Cougars.

For approximately the next 20 points, both CUC and CUW battled for the lead back and forth between teams. Kieran Heller (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) came out to join the three pointers with a far away shot that helped give some momentum for the Cougars. After this point, the Cougars were able to hold on to the lead the rest of the game and win by a very close two-point lead, 87-85.

The Cougars stay on the road next week as they travel to Carroll University on Tuesday, November 22nd for a 7 p.m. tipoff. Coverage of the game and everything CUC men's basketball can be found at cucougars.com.
