WAUKESHA, WIS. — The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's basketball team traveled to Carroll University for a non-conference matchup before the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The Cougars were able to defeat the Pioneers with a score of 73-67.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
-
Three Cougars had double digit points on the night
-
Jordan Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) led the Cougar offense with 18 points, five steals, and went five for six at the free throw line
-
Brent Hatten (Olney, Ill.) and Justin Greenlee (Brown Deer, Wis.) led the way in rebounds with eight and seven, respectively
Matthews started off the game with a quick two and asserted the Cougars dominance with the first points of the game. Greenlee and Emanuel Wilson (Wheaton, Ill.) worked together to show the speed of the Cougar offense with some quick work down the court.
With a quick nine point lead, CUC was out in front of Carroll with a score of 11-2. As the Pioneers began to try and chip away at the Cougar lead, Greenlee and Jackson Holzheimer (Sheboygan, Wis.) found some opportunities to stay in front. As Carroll continued to try and chip away at CUC, Liam Cameron (Ventura, Calif.) laid out a huge block to help stop the momentum in its' tracks.
Hatten and Matthews both had an opportunity to score again, before Jacob Collicott (Lafayette, Ind.) and William Bishop-Green (Chicago, Ill.) both got into a scoring trend with a couple of points. Going into the half, the Cougars led the Pioneers with a score of 44-24.
Coming out of the half, the Pioneers were clearly not done with this game and wanted to get the Cougars on their heels. With the Cougars leading more than 20 points, the Pioneers went on a run of points before a response was made by CUC. Hatten supplied a handful of free throw points, while Greenlee and Bishop-Green found a way to body through the defense and create more opportunities for the Cougars. Collicott also found an opportunity to steal the momentum and run off to score.
The Pioneers took it upon themselves to really fight back and bring the game within six points with a score of 68-62. Matthews, Bishop-Green, and Hatten found a couple of extra points to keep the Cougars out in front and secure their fourth straight win with a score of 73-67.
The Cougars have this coming week off for the Thanksgiving holiday, but will be back on the road next week to take on Edgewood on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff. For coverage of all of our sports, head to cucougars.com/coverage
