Early Goal Leads Cougars to First Win

RIVER FOREST, ILL. --- The Concordia University Chicago men's soccer team (1-8-1, 1-5-1) hosted the Rockford University Regents (3-5-4, 1-3-1) Wednesday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. Oscar Montejano's early goal in the first half and strong second half defense preserved the 1-0 lead, as CUC picked up their first win of the season.

Inside the Box Score
  • Oscar Montejano (Zion, Ill.) scored his first goal of the season and fourth of his career.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Kyle Schultz (Pingree Grove, Ill.) made four saves, which is a new career high.
  • CUC's 19 shots are the second most on the season.
  • Chad Flanders picked up his first win since being name head coach.

CUC pressed Rockford early in the match and was rewarded for their hustle. Montejano drove through the Regents' defense and delivered a strike from 16-yards out into the top-left corner of the goal. His first goal of the season gave CUC an early 1-0 in the 25th minute.

The Cougars' offense maintained a steady pace for the remainder of the half with seven shots, with three on goal. Brayan Gonzalez (Glendale Heights, Ill.) put one shot on goal, and finished the match with a team high four shots. Rockford had few chances and tallied three shots.

The second half consisted of few scoring opportunities for each team and lock-down defense. Garrett Poynter (Noblesville, Ind.) nearly scored on a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper. His shot off the right foot hit the post inches away from the net.

Freshman goalkeeper Kyle Schultz replaced Nicholas Pasut (New Boston, Mich.) in the 67th minute. Shortly after, Schultz made a tremendous diving save on Lorenzo Amador's (Beloit, Wis.) shot from 25-yards out. He finished the match with a career-high four saves. CUC went on to win the match 1-0.

The Cougars are back at home Sunday, October 9 against Marian University. Kickoff from Concordia Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m. Coverage of the match can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
