Cougars Sweep Regents in Season Finale

ROCKFORD ILL.. -- Closing the season on the road, the Concordia University Chicago women's volleyball team took the court against the Rockford Regents, claiming the win 3-0.

Inside the Box
  • Grace Heywood (Northbrook, Ill.)led the Cougars with 22 kills while Eve Dicken (St. Louis, Mo.) followed behind with eight.
  • Isabelle Vernengo (Plainfield, Ind.) led the match with 40 assists, her second highest this season.
  • Julia Beers (Mishawaka, Ind.) closed the night with two service aces and 13 digs in her last game in the maroon and gold.

Falling behind early in the first set, the Cougars were forced to find the energy to climb. A big swing from Heywood put the Cougars on top, where they'd stay for the remainder of the first set.

In the second set, the Cougars maintained their dominance as they jumped to an early 4-1 lead. After allowing the Regents to go on a run and take the lead, the Cougars kicked into high gear and fought back. A kill from Heywood accompanied a big time block and a Katie Schrems (South Bend, Ind.) kill gave the Cougars the chance to regain the lead and closed the second set 25-20.

The Regents continued to fight back and once again took the lead over the Cougars. A 6-0 run gave the Cougars a nice cushion as they went into the back half of the last set, but once again fell behind to the Regents. Despite a few point-for-point rallies, the Cougars were able to close the set on a 4-0 run, finishing the third set 25-22. The clean sweep against the Regents was their fifth on the season.

This match marked the close of the 2022 women's volleyball season, with the Cougars finishing 11-15 overall and 6-8 in NACC play. The Cougars would like to thank Julia Beers (Mishawaka, Ind.), Grace Heywood (Northbrook, Ill.), Jaida Carr (Livermore, Calif.), Katie Schrems (South Bend, Ind.), and Katie Stonich (Sadieville, Ky.) for their contributions to the CUC Volleyball program.
