River Forest, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago men's soccer team hosted their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match at Concordia Stadium as they hosted the Edgewood College Eagles. After being down 2-1 heading into the half, the Cougars were able to make a big comeback as they defeated the Eagles 5-2 for their first NACC win of the season.
In the beginning of the match, the Eagles came out strong, scoring within the first two minutes of the game. CUC responded 15 minutes later with a goal of their own, but that wasn't enough to hold off the Eagles in the first half. Edgewood scored another goal in the remaining 10 minutes in the first as both teams headed off the field with a score of 2-1.
Once CUC was back on the field, nothing was stopping the offensive pressure they were putting on the Eagles. The Cougars responded by scoring four goals within a four-minute timespan. This sealed the game for Concordia as they finished the game with a 5-2 win.
Highlights of the Match:
- Freshman Garrett Poynter (Noblesville, Ind.) recorded two goals during today's game. He scored his first goal in the 54th minute off a pass from Ryan Kuhlman (Darien, Ill.), and then followed up shortly after in the 57th minute to give Grayden McClellan (Itasca, Ill.) an assist.
- Along with his assist on Poynter's goal, McClellan added another assist on a goal scored by Oscar Montejano (Zion, Ill.) while also registering a goal of his own off a pass from Austin Montejano (Zion, Ill.). This gave McClellan a new career-high for points scored in a game with four.
- Kuhlman sparked the Cougars' offense with his goal in the 16th minute of the game. He went in for a header deflected by the Eagles' goalkeeper, then quickly followed up with a second header that scored the first equalizing goal. He then helped set up the offense on his assist to Poynter for the team's second half equalizer.
- Both Austin and Oscar Montejano scored points in today's match for the Cougars, which is the first time the two brothers have done so in their careers. Oscar finished the day with one goal while Austin registered an assist.
- In net, Nicholas Pasut (New Boston, Mich.) made key plays to keep the ball away from the Cougars' net.
The Cougars will have three days off before they are back in River Forest as they host another NACC opponent in the Aurora University Spartans. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22.
