River Forest, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago women's soccer team played their third straight match in Concordia Stadium as the Cougars took on the North Park University Vikings. After the two teams headed into overtime, the Vikings were the ones to come out on top as CUC lost 3-2.
Both teams came out strong in the first half as they played strong defense, resulting in a 0-0 score as they headed to the locker rooms. It wasn't until the 50th minute where the Vikings scored their first goal of the day. CUC followed up shortly behind in the 63rd minute as
Medelin Loza (Cicero, Ill.) recorded a goal off a penalty kick.
With just 17 minutes left in the second half, North Park struck again, taking the lead with a score of 2-1. But the Cougars did not give up. Melicia Kenworthy (New Lenox, Ill.) found the back of the net off a cross from
Lucia Fullone (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) to even out the score and take the game to overtime. In the 97th minute, North Park scored the first goal of overtime which ultimately resulted in the 3-2 win for the Vikings.
Player Highlights of the Match:
- Loza's goal in the 63rd minute was the first of her career with the Cougars. She also contributed an additional shot on the day.
- Kenworthy's goal was also the first of her career as a freshman for CUC.
- The Cougars' defensive line primarily anchored by Karissa Walters (Zeeland, Mich.), Meagan Wilkinson (Georgetown, Ky.), and Valeria Fernandez (Burbank, Ill.) made key plays to keep the ball away from North Park's forwards.
The Cougars will have three days off before they are back on the field in River Forest as they take on the Benedictine University for their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game of the 2021 season. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m.
