Box Score Concordia University Chicago baseball (6-8) headed north to Wisconsin Lutheran College (5-12) for what was scheduled to be a seven inning doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Cougars fell 7-6 in eight innings in game one before inclement weather cut the second game short just two batters in.
The Warriors jumped on the board in the first with three straight hits to start the game, putting them up 2-0. Starting pitcher Jon Meyers (Elmhurst, Ill.) settled in afterward, going 4.2 innings on the day, allowing three earned on eight hits and striking out two.
After four quiet innings, 10 Cougars came to the plate in the fifth. Sophomore Caleb Anderson (Plainfield, Ill.) got things rolling with a lead-off single to left and quickly moved into scoring position after a walk by fellow sophomore Colton Wallace (Hampshire, Ill.). Junior Niles Gall (Oak Lawn, Ill.) then loaded the bases with a bunt single.
Sophomore Bryce Vincent (Algonquin, Ill.) delivered the big blow with a two-RBI single to knot things up. Sophomore Gary Maynard (Oswego, Ill.) followed up Vincent's single with a sac-fly to give the Cougars their first lead. After advancing to third on the sac-fly, Vincent raced home on a wild pitch to provide CUC an insurance run.
WLC didn't go quietly, they got one back quickly in the bottom half of the fifth and later tied it in their final chance in the seventh to force extra innings.
The Cougars immediately put pressure on in the eighth with another lead-off hit from Anderson. After a fielder's choice from freshman Carter Gledhill (Arlington Heights, Ill.), Gall singled to put runners on the corners. The ball wound up in center field on Gall's steal attempt at second, advancing him to third and scoring Gledhill to give CUC a 5-4 lead.
Much like earlier, the Cougars added another insurance run on a wild pitch, continuing their heads up play on the bases on the afternoon.
The Warriors again battled back, scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth, capped by a walk-off fielder's choice.
Senior Cade Laudenschlager (Cave Creek, Ariz.) had a strong outing out of the bullpen, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing an unearned run while surrendering just one hit.
Vincent, Anderson and Gall all collected multiple hits on the day, with Vincent adding a pair of walks and two of the team's three RBIs.
The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to the Illinois Institute of Technology for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon, with the second game beginning shortly after the conclusion of the first. Coverage will be available on the IIT Athletics website.
