Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Concordia University Chicago Baseball team (10-17) fell twice on the road on Saturday at the hands of the Benedictine University Eagles (21-6) by final scores of 8-1 and 6-1.
Game One
It was a fast start for the Eagles, who scored four runs in the first two innings after scoring just two all game on Saturday.
The Cougars threatened in the fourth, with junior Alex Kinert (Cave Creek, Ariz.) driving home sophomore Bryce Vincent (Algonquin, Ill.) and putting runners on the corners. No more runs came across the plate in the inning, however, and the team was left off the board the rest of the game.
Benedictine responded with three in the bottom half of the fourth and added an additional run in the sixth on their way to the 8-1 victory.
Junior Michael Zavoli (Lake Barrington, Ill.) was on base three times for the Cougars in game one, going 2-3 with a walk. Sophomore Westin Stutzman (Goshen, Ind.) had a strong outing in relief, going 4.1 innings surrendering just one run on three hits
Game Two
The day's second game was tied at one a piece for the majority of the game before Benedictine hung a five-spot in the home half of the eighth to take a 6-1 lead.
It was the Cougars who struck in the first inning this time around, thanks to a lead-off double from sophomore Gary Maynard (Oswego, Ill.) and a two-out double from senior Brody Mariotti (Yorktown, Ill.) that delivered the team's first lead of the day.
The Eagles tied the game at one in the third and it remained that way until the five-run eighth.
In his first collegiate start, freshman Jack Rector (Peorira, Ariz.) was excellent. The left-hander allowed just one earned over seven innings and struck out three.
The two teams will finish off their four game series on Monday afternoon in River Forest, Ill. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m., and a stream to the game will be available on the CUC Athletics Youtube channel.
