In a heartbreaking ending in the NACC semifinals, the Concordia University Chicago women's soccer team (3-7) fell short to the Benedictin Eagles (3-5) in penalty kicks.
The Cougars took the field in a dominant fashion, taking more shots in the first half than the Eagles, but weren't able to find the back of the net. The senior duo of Samantha Goodlett (Hamilton, Ohio) and Cecilia Kochanek (Streamwood, Ill.) worked together in the offense to create opportunities. Though neither were able to put the Cougars on the board with their shot attempts, it's no doubt that the Cougars benefitted from having senior leaders on the field.
No stranger to putting her body on the line for the sake of the game, sophomore keeper Kassie Silenzi (Carpentersville, Ill.) came out today with a total of nine saves and many other key moments that kept the score sheet clean.
After a total of 110 minutes of play, the score remained 0-0, leaving the game to end with a penalty shootout. Two of CUC's four penalty kicks were good, but fell short of Benedictine's four, ultimately giving the Eagle's the win.
Though their run in the NACC tournament has come to an end, the Cougars will take on Carthage College on Wednesday, April 28th.
