The Concordia University Chicago softball team (8-18-1) hosted a non-conference doubleheader today, April 21, as they faced the Marian University (16-15). After playing the two games, the Cougars found themselves splitting with the Sabres on the day.
Â
The first game is where CUC found the most success. They scored the first run of the day as
Annabella Archuletta (Pueblo, Colo.) brought
Nia DeGeorge (Omaha, Neb.) home. They were able to keep the Sabres from scoring throughout the remaining six innings. The Cougars then scored another run as
Becky Pieroni (Montgomery, Ill.) hit a single up the middle, bringing
Carole Ross (Whittier, Calif.) home to finish the game 2-0.
Â
Holly Bathje (Davis Junction, Ill.) pitched her first complete shutout of the season. During her time on the mound, she struck out six of the 25 batters she faced.
Â
The second game told a different story for the Cougars. The Sabres grabbed an early lead as they scored a run in the first inning. From there, Marian grabbed another two runs before the Cougars could get one. The scoring continued in this way, which resulted in a 12-4 loss in the sixth for Concordia.
Â
Archuletta led the Cougars in this contest as she recorded two runs, one of them being a home run in the fifth.
Sydney Sterrett (Lafayette, Ind.) and
Isabel Ortiz (Homer Glen, Ill.) grabbed the other two runs for CUC. Archuletta also registered a team-high three RBIs while
Alyssa Kontopoulos (Elmhurst, Ill.) finished with one.
Â
From the mound,
Kate Roberts (Pontiac, Ill.) had the most successful outing. She pitched just over one inning for the Cougars, striking out three of the seven batters she faced.
Â
The Cougars will not take any time off as they are back on the field tomorrow, April 22, as they host Edgewood College for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch will happen at 3 p.m. with the second game to follow.
