Senior Day brings big win for men's soccer against Regents

The Concordia University Chicago men's soccer team won 3-0 against Rockford University.

The Concordia University Chicago men's soccer team's (1-7-1) final regular season game of 2021 proved to be a game of firsts as they defeated the Rockford University Regents (0-6-2) 3-0. Most notably, it was the Cougars' first win of the season that also secured the team a spot in the Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference Tournament.

All three goals were the first of their respective scorers' careers, as well. Fittingly on Senior Day, the opening goal was scored by senior forward Gianni Gaskins (Studio City, Calif.) in the sixth minute. Joel Diaz (Chicago, Ill.) played a dangerous pass through Rockford's defense to Ryan Kulhman (Darien, Ill.), who squared the ball across the Rockford six-yard box for Gaskins to tap in at the opposite post.

The Cougars doubled their lead even earlier in the second half on a well-placed header from freshman forward Julian Granzetto (Evanston, Ill.) for his first CUC goal. A free kick was near midfield by Alberto Arellano (Chicago, Ill.) found Gerardo Medina (Cicero, Ill.) at the back post, who perfectly set up Granzetto.

The icing on the cake came in the 87th minute, when Regent goalkeeper Maverick Attwood saw a Fabian Aranda (Warrenville, Ill.) free kick slip through his hands for the Cougar left back's first ever goal.

At the other end, sophomore goalie Nicholas Pasut (New Boston, Mich.) secured his first shutout of the season and second of his career with six saves.

It was a celebratory atmosphere at Concordia Stadium with plenty of friends and family in attendance on a sunny afternoon in River Forest. The Cougars hope there will be plenty more to celebrate in the postseason, which begins on Thursday, April 22.
