Box Score 2 Concordia University Chicago baseball (8-13) split a doubleheader on Saturday against rival Dominican University (6-16). The Cougars won game one 2-0 behind a strong start from senior Cole Carman (Littleton, Colo.) before falling 13-5 in the day's second game.
Game One
Carman was handed the ball in the first game of the series and did not disappoint. The senior tossed a complete game gem, allowing just eight hits and one walk while striking out 10. The Stars were unable to generate much at all on offense, with only two runners reaching third base the entire game.
With the dominating performance of Carman on the mound, the Cougar bats needed to provide just one run. They were able to do so, and even added an insurance run for good measure.
The first, and eventual winning run came in the fourth inning on a sac-fly from sophomore Gary Maynard (Oswego, Ill.) that plated junior Nathan Dewey (Geneva, Ill.). Dewey reached on a one out single and was then aggressive on the bases, advancing to second on a passed ball and reaching third following an overthrow.
The insurance run came a couple innings later in the sixth thanks to a two-out RBI single from senior Brody Mariotti (Yorktown, Ind.) that scored junior Howie Hatton (North Riverside, Ill.). Hatton led off the inning with a double, the lone Cougar extra-base hit of the game.
The most trouble Carman faced came in the eighth inning when the Stars put a man on third with nobody out. Up to the challenge, the senior retired the next three batters on his way to his third victory of the season.
Game Two
Wanting to avoid back-to-back shutouts, the Stars were quick to score in the second game with two runs in the bottom of the first. The offense continued to click, scoring two more in the third before hanging a three-spot in the fourth.
Trailing 8-0, the Cougars began to chip into the lead in the fifth. Junior Niles Gall (Oak Lawn, Ill.) got things started with a two-out triple to right. Fellow junior Alex Kinert (Cave Creek, Ariz.) followed that up with his first hit and RBI of the year to get CUC on the board. The team wasn't done there, as Hatton launched his second home run of the year to make it 8-3.
Kinert delivered again in the seventh with his second RBI single of the day. The Cougars trailed 9-4 and had the bases loaded with no one out but were unable to do any more damage.
The Cougars scored their final run of the game in the eighth on an RBI single from junior Matthew Uba (Darien, Ill.) that brought home Maynard.
Gall, Uba and Kinert all had multiple hits for the Cougars in the loss. Extra base hits were provided by Mariotti, Maynard, Gall (triple) and Hatton (home run).
The two teams will complete their weekend series tomorrow afternoon at the Thunderdome with their second doubleheader in as many days. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., and a stream will be available on the
CUC Athletics Youtube channel.
