The Concordia University Chicago softball team (5-15-1) traveled to Edgewood College (9-17) to make up a doubleheader scheduled for April 10. After two games of play, the Cougars found themselves pulling out the brooms as they swept the Eagles on the day.
Â
In the first game of the series, CUC came out strong.
Sydney Paulauskis-Lauher (Chatham, Ill.) scored the first run of the game off a hit from
Gina Westphal (Elmhurst, Ill.) to put CUC on the board. The Eagles answered with five runs of their own, but that didn't stop the Cougars. Concordia scored four runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh for the final push to secure the 9-6 win.
Â
Becky Pieroni (Montgomery, Ill.),
Annabella Archuletta (Pueblo, Colo.) and
Sydney Sterrett (Lafayette, Ind.) each finished this game with two runs each. Paulauskis-Lauher,
Nia DeGeorge (Omaha, Neb.) and Izzy Ortiz (Homer Glen, Ill.) grabbed one run each to round out the scoring. Along with that, Westphal led the team in RBIs with four as the team's designated hitter. Pieroni, Paulauskis-Lauher, DeGeorge and
Claire Urchell (Crown Point, Ind.) also helped the team, grabbing one RBI each.
Â
On the mound,
Holly Bathje (Davis Junction, Ill.) started the game off for CUC, pitching four of the seven innings. She struck out four batters and only walked one during that time. Karlie Knight (Lake Station, Ind.) came in for the last three innings, striking out two batters for the Cougars.
Â
Shortly after the first game ended, the second one began. At the start of the game, Pieroni scored the first run off a single from DeGeorge to give Concordia a big start. Similar to the first game, the Eagles answered with two runs of their own, but with the momentum gained from the first seven innings of the night, CUC was ready to fight back.
Â
Following those two runs from the Eagles, the Cougars came back swinging, scoring nine runs across three innings. They continued to push forward, recording another three runs in the final inning of the game. Due to the mercy rule, Concordia secured the sweep over Edgewood in the sixth with a score of 13-5.
Â
Two home runs were hit in this game, and they were from Pieroni and DeGeorge. From those home runs, Pieroni and DeGeorge led the team in RBIs as they recorded four and three, respectively. Pieroni also led the team in runs with four as Sterrett followed up close behind with two. Other players making it home for the Cougars were Paulauskis-Lauher, Archuletta, Ortiz, Westphal,
Hailey Howard (Machesney Park, Ill.) and
Alexis Hilgert (Naperville, Ill.).
Â
Kate Roberts (Pontiac, Ill.) started the game on the mound for the Cougars as she pitched five of the six innings. During that time, she struck out four batters and only walked one. Howard came in for the final inning of the game as she struck out a batter of her own.
Â
The Cougars have one day off before they are back on the field against Dominican University for the start of the Division Street Rivalry. They will play two doubleheaders, with one at Dominican on Friday and the other at home on Saturday.
