Pella, Iowa -- Coming off a strong win against Alverno on Saturday, the Concordia University Chicago women's basketball team (3-4, 2-1 NACC) hit the road to take on Central College on Tuesday night where they fell 69-61.
Inside the Box
-
Jaylene Wade (Lansing, Ill.) led the Cougars with 19 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
-
The team shot 42.9% from the three-point range, going 12-28.
-
Hot hands gave the Cougars 14 steals on the night, including four for Ava Gardner (Park Ridge, Ill.) and five for Alisyn MacGregor (Loves Park, Ill.).
-
Mikalah Ellis (Chicago, Ill.)Â led the team in rebounds with 12, with MacGregor following behind with six.
The Cougars came out flat, allowing the Dutch to score the first 12 points of the game before a jumper from Ellis ended their dry spell. From there Ellis, Wade, and Gardner put numbers up to lessen the difference. A Cougar timeout would give them the momentum to go on a 9-0 run to end the first quarter.Â
Heading into the second, Wade and Prentciss Gates (Gary, Ind,) drained threes, while Bailey Steinkamp (Cary, Ill.) created enough space to find a mid range jumper. A combination of Ellis free throws, Gardner steal, and Gates free throws brought the Cougars within one point. In retaliation, the Dutch got going on an 8-0 run to close out the second quarter, leaving the Cougars trailing by nine.Â
Â
The Cougars were ready to fight back, outscoring the Dutch 18-15 in the third quarter. Fresh off the bench, junior Chloe Schaafsma (Lockport, Ill.) made her presence known with back to back layups. Staying stagnant for most of the quarter, the Cougars looked to get things back on track with Mackenzie Straulin (Johnsburg, Ill.). The sophomore heated up quickly, hitting back to back threes to bring them back within single digits. As the clock ran out, the energy and effort remained high with sophomore Lauren Saleh (River Forest, Ill.) deflecting an inbound play to close the game, falling 69-61.
